View Full Version : More Recognizable Actors on UM (not named Matthew McConaughey)
RobinW 07-14-2010, 06:51 PM Hi folks
I just came across this forum about a month ago and reading through these threads has become a new addiction for me ;) , so I thought I'd finally contribute something. I've been rewatching my "Unsolved Mysteries" DVD sets and have recognized some fairly prominent actors in some of the re-creations. I know there have been quite a few threads on this subject, but I don't believe any of these have ever been mentioned before:
In "Lucky School", the mad bomber, David Young, who tries to blow up the school in Wyoming is played by noted horror movie actor Bill Moseley, best known for playing Otis Driftwood in Rob Zombie's "House of 1000 Corpses" and "The Devil's Rejects":
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0608405/
In the Agatha Christie segment, the passerby who tries to help Agatha after her car has crashed is played by noted British actor Jack Wild, best known for his Oscar-nominated portrayal of the Artful Dodger in the 1968 version of "Oliver". Interestingly, on the DVD commentary, the director of this segment talks about the British having a very different mindset about acting, which is why an established British actor wouldn't consider appearing on "Unsolved Mysteries" to be "beneath" them.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0928349/
In the "Frontera Women's Prison Killing" segment, I also recognized prominent character actor Ned Bellamy as the official from the coroner's office who investigates the inmate's death. He has numerous film and TV credits to his name and may be best known for playing the crazy Peterman mailroom guy on "Seinfeld".

And for the rare chance to see two "Unsolved Mysteries" actors sharing a scene together on another show, watch "24": Season 7, Episode 16. There's a White House briefing scene where you can see both Ned Bellamy and Scott Lawrence (who played Adam Hecht's homeless friend, Tony) playing members of the President's cabinet.

 Hi!
That one's really cool and something I was completely unaware of until now. What're the chances?
I wouldn't doubt if you knew already, but Stephanie Weir of Mad TV fame was also on UM. She played one of the hotel residents in the Neil Jennings segment, which happened in her hometown of Odessa, TX.
Is your avatar from The Informant, by the way? Decatur, IL used to be a second home to me.
RobinW 07-14-2010, 07:28 PM Yes, I consider Matt Damon from "The Informant!" to be my celebrity doppelganger. I've always been told I looked a bit like Matt Damon, but when he put on glasses and grew a moustahce for that role, the resemblance to me became pretty striking.
BTW, I think that if Mark Whitacre had gone on the run for his crimes, his story would have for hell of a segment on "Unsolved Mysteries"!

Ahh I see.
And absolutely. Have you read Rats in the Grain by chance? It's all about the ADM scandal. My father used to work in the corn refining industry (he worked for a month at the A.E. Staley plant in Decatur during the '92 strike, actually). I had no idea so much was going on literally right across the street at ADM at the time, though.
brianh333 07-14-2010, 10:30 PM As you guys watch these DVD sets, keep an eye out for Marc Macaulay (he's one of those all-time "hey, it's that guy" character actors). I remember him most as playing one of the assistant-bad-guys in Passenger 57.
I would swear on my life that he made an appearance in one of the UM episodes I saw on Spike, within the last 6 months. I'll never remember the name of the episode, but I seem to remember him playing one of those "detectives who doesn't say a whole lot" in the re-enactment.

No, I knew pretty much nothing at all about the case before the movie came out and went into it thinking it was about some hero who exposed corporate corruption. How little did I know, LOL.

If Marc Macaulay was on UM, it would have probably been for a case set in Florida since I think it's practicallly a state law for anything filmed down there to feature him.

browneyes106 07-15-2010, 12:47 PM Cheryl Hines appeared in a segment. I remember seeing her but I can't remember exactly which segment it was.
WishfulDreamer 07-15-2010, 03:21 PM A guy from Lost appeared as Mitchell Shigemoto (spelling?) in the 200th solved case of the Vietname vet finding the friend who had saved his life. I don't watch Lost but have seen an episode or so and recognized him.
xxxxmattxxxx69 07-15-2010, 06:12 PM In the Joe Cole murder segment Henry Rollins was on.
Reggie White appeared in a church burning segment in the 90s. Those are the best I can think of
Tarnished Angel 07-15-2010, 06:48 PM Hey, awesome message board here guys! This is my first post. Well, other actors that I've recognized from UM include:
Mark Joy, who played Danny Casolaro. He's a D.C./Baltimore based actor who played the father in Pecker, amongst many other roles.
Gilmer McCormick, who played Sister Margaret in Silent Night, Deadly Night, played someone's best friend in a segment, although I'm blanking on the case.
Tierre Turner played one of the 4 guys who were run off the road by a white trash maniac. He's mainly a stunt coordinator in Hollywood now, but he acted as a kid in several blaxploitation movies (Friday Foster, Bucktown, Cornbread, Earl & Me, and others).
Radness.

Hello and welcome!
That's a very interesting tidbit. This wealth of information from new members here lately is really cool.
In the Joe Cole murder segment Henry Rollins was on.
Reggie White appeared in a church burning segment in the 90s. Those are the best I can think of
Casey Kasem was interviewed in the 1996 segment about the death of singer Bobby Fuller. He also has something in common with the late Robert Stack: they both did voice work in the Tranformers franchise! Kasem was the voice of several characters including Cliffjumper and Bluestreak; Robert Stack, of course, was the voice of Ultra Magnus in the 1986 movie.
Who played Don Decker in the Rainboy segment? I swear I saw that actor in other shows!
RobinW 08-12-2010, 10:17 AM Who played Don Decker in the Rainboy segment? I swear I saw that actor in other shows!
He looks familiar to me too. I think the best bet would be to do IMDB searches on all the actors listed at the end on the Psychics DVD that "Rainboy" is featured on and see if any matches come up. Trying to find out the identities of actors in UM segments is often as difficult as trying to solve some of the cases  .
DazzlerSparkler 09-05-2010, 04:50 PM Stephanie Weir was on one of the ghost segments. She is best known for her roles such as Dot, Mrs Campbell, Doctor Kylie, Muriel Westig, and Angela Wright on MadTV as well as guest spots on shows like Flashforward.

I was never aware of Stephanie Weir being in a segment about ghosts, but she was definitely in the Neil Jennings segment as one of the hotel residents. Weir is originally from Odessa, TX, where the Jennings murder took place.
TracyLynnS 09-05-2010, 08:45 PM I remember seeing the episode with Matthew McConaughey when it first aired nearly 20 years ago. Even though it was around 1990, we still had a console tv!
Anyway, the first thing I noticed was that he was very unattractive, to the point that his looks distracted from the segment. I was surprised that he didn't just fade into obscurity after that tv appearance, but actually became an international sex symbol.
Oooga Chucka 09-06-2010, 01:07 PM On the episode about two French sailors on the run (Laurent Hernas and Yves Emmanuel Pain), one of the sailors is played by who I was almost certain was Benito Martinez (Acevada of "The Shield," if you've ever seen this wonderful show). He's not listed in the credits and it's not on his IMDB page, but it looks just like him, for what it's worth.
DazzlerSparkler 09-06-2010, 08:02 PM I was never aware of Stephanie Weir being in a segment about ghosts, but she was definitely in the Neil Jennings segment as one of the hotel residents. Weir is originally from Odessa, TX, where the Jennings murder took place.
Oops! That's what I meant. I thought it was about ghosts. Sorry!
yellowVWchase 10-01-2010, 03:52 PM The actor who played Donnie Darko's father was one of the members of the wacko religious cult in the episode about Nelson DeCloud and the DeCloud family...
RobinW 10-01-2010, 04:08 PM The actor who played Donnie Darko's father was one of the members of the wacko religious cult in the episode about Nelson DeCloud and the DeCloud family...
Ah, I watched that segment not too long ago and thought it might be him! That would be Holmes Osborne, whose got quite an extensive list of credits:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0651660/
Here are two new additions from the Lost Loves segment about that Russian lady, Farezat Abdokov, who was looking for her sister.
Russian actor Boris Krutonog, who's had roles in many Hollywood films and TV shows:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0472928/
Canadian actor Allan Kolman, who's best known for having parasites almost pop out of his stomatch in David Cronenberg's film "Shivers":
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0464255/
nicoge21 11-18-2010, 08:05 PM The guy who played Tony in the Adam Hecht case was/is in alot of TV commercials. (fairly recent ones too!) he was also in Jag.
Guardian 11-20-2010, 04:07 PM I have often wondered, why is it they only give the names of a couple of actors on each UM episode? It seeks almost random as to which ones they give credit to. Anyone know why?

I believe I heard that they were only obligated to give credit to actors who were official members of the Screen Actors Guild. So many of the actors they used were local, non-professional actors who were found when they held open auditions at the location they just happened to filming from, so there was no obligation to give them a credit. Even Matthew McConaughey was found in that fashion since he just happened to be a local kid who was looking to break into acting when they were filming the Edward Harold Bell story in Texas.
Oooga Chucka 12-22-2010, 11:35 AM I've definitely seen the guy who played "Wadada" before. He's been a bit player in several movies, and I'm pretty sure he was even in Michael Jackson's "Black or White" video.

That would be Jeffrey Anderson-Gunter, who's got a pretty extensive filmography:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0027599/
Daniel Dae Kim (Jin in Lost and Chin Ho on Hawaii Five-O) was on UM, in the episode about the Korean man whose wife was murdererd.
RobinW 01-07-2011, 03:13 PM Found another one: in the "Mary Celeste" segment, the role of Captain David Morehouse is played by Larry Blamire. He's best known as the director/writer/star of a personal fave of mine, "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra", the hilarious spoof of low-budget 1950s sci-fi B-movies.

Tillshalligan 09-01-2011, 02:23 PM I saw Roseanne Barr was on the D. B. Cooper segment. She could be seen twice, I think, among the passengers at the airport either getting off or on the hijacked plane.
MissFit29 09-04-2011, 05:16 PM The guy that played the truck driver on the Swedish Hitchhikers segment looks a lot like the guy that played David Puddy on Seinfeld.

:) You got a question - you ask the 8-ball!

Yeah, I saw someone who looks like her, but I really doubt it's her, considering that she was already an established stand-up comic and I believe her sitcom was just starting right around the time this segment originally aired.
MissFit29 09-05-2011, 12:13 AM :) You got a question - you ask the 8-ball!
Lord, that jacket was on par with a Tony Alamo creation.
Feels like an Arby's night!
ernmerica 09-06-2011, 08:21 PM I am pretty sure Sean Gildea is David Cox's superior in his segment.
Sean Gildea is in a lot of Farrelly brothers films, notably the bowling alley manager in Kingpin staring Woody Harrellson. The manager set up the bet where Munson won but was attacked because he played with fake money.

You would be punctillious in saying that. :)
chacha6581 09-09-2011, 05:21 PM Ok I do not know if these actors have been named, or if the people around here will recognize them, but:
Wilson Cruz, who starred on My So Called Life, and Noah's Arc, was in the episode about that Hollywood producer who used to pay boys in the projects for sex.... the producer that was found dead, suicide I believe...
Also, the episode about the young runaway that met 3 good samaritans on a bus, and was encouraged to contact her parents, featured Angelique Bates, from the Nickelodeon show "All That".
crystaldawn 09-10-2011, 07:59 AM Loving all these Seinfeld references....:)
Cheryl Hines was in more than one UM segment. She played Sharon Kinne, played the mother of the little girl who was being assaulted by her nanny and I think there was one more that I can't remember right now. Sad to say she wasn't proud of her UM roles it appears. Found this blurb in an online bio of hers:
Although many fans have revered Cheryl's memorable performances in Unsolved Mysteries and Swamp Thing. Hines modestly dismisses these early roles as "crap."
How about a big boo for Cheryl Hines....:thumbsdow
Edit: Just checked out her IMDb page and its says she played a nurse in an episode that originally aired on 3/28/97.

  She wasn't very good in the role, IMHO. If she means that over UM being crap, then I would accept the statement. ;)
chacha6581 09-10-2011, 04:46 PM Yeah, her roles in both Space Chimps and Hannah Montana really worked her acting skills....

Which case did Wilson Cruz star in? I can't find any information on it.
And if you don't mind my asking, what ever became of that girl and the 3 young men that convinced her to go home? I remember they lost contact with one of them, but are they all still good friends today?
WishfulDreamer 09-15-2011, 10:29 PM Wilson Cruz is in the David McLeod case for about a minute. A friend of his in the segment is trying to convince him to go to McLeod and exchange sex for money while Wilson shows disgust. I wrote about it in the Unintentionally Funny moments thread too haha
Todd Mueller 09-15-2011, 10:40 PM How about a big boo for Cheryl Hines....:thumbsdow
"Cheryl Hines is alive... and she lives in Hollywood. Cheryl Hines is alive... and she lives in Hollywood."
(Sorry -- I couldn't resist.)
McBevis 02-25-2012, 06:15 PM Fans of Nickelodeon in the early 90s may recognize Judy Grafe, the lady who played Lillian Schwartz in the segment about Leonardo Da Vinci and the origins of the Mona Lisa. She was better known for playing the mother with the metal plate in her head on "The Adventures Of Pete & Pete."

I remember that show. Good times.
MegtheEgg86 07-04-2013, 04:31 PM This might sound strange (especially since I have no idea what her name is), but I just saw the woman who played "Katherine" in the Eric Kessler segment on a commercial for Physician's Mutual dental insurance. I saw her months earlier on a different commercial for the same product, but had forgotten to post about it. She looks nearly identical to what she did back then--she hardly looks like she's aged at all.
DJ_Foxx 07-04-2013, 05:14 PM On the CW Toddy segment. Not sure if anyone else remembers it but she was the older black woman who shot for standing up to the drug dealers who had taken over her neighborhood. Anyway, one of the guys who terrorized/taunted her was played by comedian Kevin Hart.

Not to be rude, but are you sure it wasn't just a lookalike? I think Kevin Hart is too young to have played one of those guys because he was only born in 1980 and the segment was filmed in the early 1990s. Most of those guys look like they were late teens or well into their twenties.
McBevis 07-05-2013, 10:03 AM Strictly speculation on my part, because at this point I have no way of knowing for sure, but a guy who looks AND sounds A LOT like the guy who played Paul Allen in the Eugene Bailey segment was a contestant on the October 14th, 1991 airing of "The Price Is Right." The guy on TPIR was named Ernest (I don't remember his last name). If anybody knows either way, I'd be very much interested in knowing.
Spastic.Jerk 07-06-2013, 03:17 PM Allen Haff from Auction Hunters played the older brother of Nick the kidnapped victim of Jesse James Hollywood. He only appears in one segment arguing with Hollywood inside of his car and then stepping out but it's definitely him, couldn't figure out why they didn't credit people until I found the explanantion most of these people don't have SAG cards here, makes total sense! I know there's more I've seen but I never post here, can't believe how many people have showed up as all I ever recognized was the Japanese guy from Lost as he was friends of that family, Henry Rollins as himself and McCaughnehey or however you spell the dudes name way to lazy to look it up

I noticed that too Meg, lol! You're right she looks like just like she did in the segment. I was just waiting for there to be a scene in the commercial where she is sitting at a fancy restaurant with Eric Kessler. :)

Yes! I'm just glad someone could share in the novelty--I told my fiance about it and he just kind of looked at me. :p
Gelatinous Goo 07-07-2013, 12:29 AM I'll leave it to both of you to instantaneously recognize the actress. :) That segment has stuck with me throughout the years, but my focus was always on the "talents" of con man Kohler/Kessler. They certainly found the right actor for the reenactment.
Wasn't the victim portrayed as being 50-60 circa 1990? The actress in question must have aged well!
wiseguy182 07-07-2013, 12:41 AM Does anyone else think the actor they got to play Kessler looked like a thin version of Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy's?

Yes, it was VERY surprising. It looked like she could've just walked off the UM set!
MegtheEgg86 07-07-2013, 01:03 AM Does anyone else think the actor they got to play Kessler looked like a thin version of Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy's?
In my head, I read this in the narrator's voice from the commercials. And yes, I agree he did look a lot like Davey T.
MegtheEgg86 01-01-2014, 09:26 PM Was very surprised to see "Lupita" from the Spanish Lotto segment on a rerun of Law & Order today, but it was her!

RobinW 01-02-2014, 01:27 AM I found out from the DVD commentary track on the Rainboy segment that the actress playing the woman who ran the pizzeria was named Eileen Galindo, who has quite a few credits to her name and has done voice acting work on "Dora the Explorer":
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0302153/
BTW, I wrote this in the original post of this thread...
Well, reading her filmography, it turns out that Eileen Galindo ALSO had a small role in "24": Season 7!
UMFan95 01-03-2014, 12:46 AM Emilio Rivera who plays Mayans MC President Marcus Alvarez from Sons of Anarchy was in Tony Castro case.
Mystery Man 01-03-2014, 01:25 PM This thread blows my mind. I had no idea Bill Moseley and a character from "Shivers" (one of David Cronenberg's best movies, imo) played characters on a tv show I enjoy just as much as their movies.
Mystery Man 01-03-2014, 01:28 PM Woops, wrong thread :p Please delete.

I was watching the movie "The Great Outdoors" just the other day and noticed that actress Stephanie Faracy (who plays John Candy's wife in the movie) looks very much like the lady who played "Katherine." Do you or anyone else know if this might be true?
TracyLynnS 02-08-2014, 01:27 PM Don't know if this was posted in this thread yet. Here's a big list of actors that appeared on the show but it doesn't include everyone:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094574/fullcredits?ref_=tt_cl_sm#cast
Looks like quite a few of the actors aren't big names, but are still active in small roles and play characters named: Nurse #1, Clerk, Policeman #1, Bystander, Secretary, Bob's Neighbor, Waitress, etc. And quite a few seem to be doing shorts and voice work.
I noticed some of them get typecast as cops and priests. One poor guy looks like he was billed as "grandpa" "elderly man" and "old man" a few times. lol

There's a resemblance for sure, but I don't think it's her.
McBevis 01-24-2016, 08:14 PM Hank Jones, the genealogist who appeared (along with 2 others) in the segment about genealogists who think that they're guided by the spirits of their ancestors, appeared in more than 2 dozen movies and TV shows from the 60s and 70s, including several episodes of "My Three Sons" and "The Patty Duke Show" and the 1974 Disney movie "Herbie Rides Again." He retired from acting in 1981 to be a full time genealogist.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_Jones_%28actor%29
Wow, did not know this at all! This is even confirmed at Jones' official website:
http://www.thedougjonesexperience.com/unsolved.htm
Of course, since Jones often wears makeup in his roles, he wasn't instantly recognizable when he was on UM, but he's definitely one of the most successful actors who's ever performed in a re-enactment.
DazzlerSparkler 01-30-2016, 02:18 AM Famous voice actor Jamieson Price (deep baritone voice, was in a small role in The Patriot, amongst a lot of anime and video games) played Lenny Dirickson.

Torgo 01-30-2016, 10:16 AM In "Lucky School", the mad bomber, David Young, who tries to blow up the school in Wyoming is played by noted horror movie actor Bill Moseley, best known for playing Otis Driftwood in Rob Zombie's "House of 1000 Corpses" and "The Devil's Rejects":

Some of us horror fans think he is better known for playing Chop Top in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.;)
Bluejay 08-24-2017, 02:55 AM I wish you could find out who played Agatha Christie in her segment. I thought she was as good as Vanessa Redgrave or better.
DazzlerSparkler 08-27-2017, 02:04 AM Stephanie Weir played one of the hotel residents doing laundry in the Neal Jennings segment.
Is the case about the producer who was molesting and later found dead in a stairwell on Amazon?
Jetjack74 08-27-2017, 08:17 PM Loving all these Seinfeld references....:)
The guy who plays Sirhan Sirhan in the RFK segment was the busboy who George got fired after the fire in the restaurant

omegadoom 09-01-2019, 10:47 AM Rex Linn (Cliffhanger, CSI: Miami) appeared as bank robber Terry Conner in Special #1 and again in the priest killer segment.
Jade_Curtiss 09-02-2019, 12:17 PM Ok, this may sound crazy, but I swear I've seen Jorja Fox (from CSI fame) on an early UM episode. I want to say it was the segment on Angelo Desidiri, and she appears one of the 'poor people' that James Majors gives the pick and shovel to at the end.
GDAWG 09-03-2019, 01:17 AM I believe that the actor who played Huey Long appeared in an episode of Hap and Leonard.
WishfulDreamer 09-03-2019, 09:38 PM The actor who portrayed Kevin Hughes has been in a few television movies. I recall seeing him in one a few years ago.
siamesemeg 09-09-2019, 09:27 AM In the Sarah Powell segment, she is portrayed by beauty youtuber Tati Westbrook, when she was much younger. She's...fine but maybe more suited to beauty vlogs.
dynoguy88 09-10-2019, 09:44 AM I believe that the actor who played Huey Long appeared in an episode of Hap and Leonard.
He also appeared in a couple episodes of 'Roseanne' as one of Dan's poker buddies.
GDAWG 09-13-2019, 01:19 AM He also appeared in a couple episodes of 'Roseanne' as one of Dan's poker buddies.
I wonder if they would bring him back for "The Connors"
GDAWG 09-29-2019, 02:51 PM Not 100% certain, but I believe Arrow's David Ramsey played Alexander in the segment about him being friends with a German boy.
Huskerz85 10-09-2019, 01:46 PM James Jude Courtney (Michael Myers in the newest 'Halloween' movies) and Karen Lynn Gorney (Stephanie in 'Saturday Night Fever', Tara Martin in 'All My Children') made brief appearances in seasons 4 and 5 respectively

Chichester Crowe 12-12-2019, 07:47 PM I'm pretty sure that George Buck Flower portrays Barron Harris on the Michael Swango segment. George is in every John Carpenter film, and I recognized him from They Live.
EighthStreet 12-22-2019, 12:33 PM Surprised this isn't in here. At least two Mr. Roger's Neighborhood actors appear in the Kecksburg UFO segment. Neighbor Abor and Chef Brocket, if I remember correctly.

Hill Harper also appeared in an episode about a woman looking for a childhood friend whom she later discovered was indeed her sister. In 1991, Jennifer G. Charlie99909 05-07-2020, 02:39 AM Clu Gulager is the mysterious man who sells the Ice Man to Frank Hansen. I also believe he’s in another segment in the Psychic Minds episode.
omegadoom 05-07-2020, 04:23 AM Clu Gulager is the mysterious man who sells the Ice Man to Frank Hansen. I also believe he’s in another segment in the Psychic Minds episode.
That's not Clu Gulager in either segment.
Charlie99909 05-07-2020, 10:40 AM That's not Clu Gulager in either segment.
It certainly looks and sounds just like him from Return of the Living Dead.
omegadoom 05-07-2020, 01:47 PM It certainly looks and sounds just like him from Return of the Living Dead.
i checked the segment. It's not him.
infinityluxe 05-08-2020, 10:28 AM I doubt this has been mentioned (nobody probably recognized him but me) actor Vonte Sweet was in the segment about C.W. Roddy. He was the main teenager heckling her and I believe he punched her.
Vonte Sweet was in Boyz In The Hood and played Sharif in Menace II Society and a few other lesser known projects.
