View Full Version : Yippee!! Another Trader Joe's just opened up
OH Nuts! 07-12-2010, 02:45 PM Near me. Just have a short walk now to one. And as much as I love the store (AND I DO!!!!!) the lines in the Union Sq. store (the only one before today) in Manhattan were ghastly - but I can't fault TJ for this as their prices are astounding. But now that there's a second one (and it just opened TODAY) I bet the lines will be better. And what's great is I have Monday's off til Sept so it'll be a great day to shop there. Finally, something nice has opened up in NYC.

Indeed they do; why I got a 5.3 oz cup of yogurt with 5 grams of fiber built in to it. Of course, they have stuff I have to pretty much avoid - but that's true of any food store I walk into.
I did notice they have made inroads toward getting more healthy options (kudos to them for that.)
One of the places the DOES NOT have the healthful food I need is McPoison's--sodium and fat capital of the Western Hemisphere (& it's ilk)
ponytail 07-15-2010, 06:47 AM I shop at Trader Joe's every other week because of the long drive but I love that store! Good food, great prices!

You definitely want to stay away from McPoison's!!!

They are wonderful aren't they!! Their prices for party stuff can't be beat - easily less than 30% of Whole Foods (and most likely even lower)

Amen to that - you need to use scientific notation to express the sodium level in the vast majority of their items LOL - those with high blood pressure beware....

Janice 07-18-2010, 04:37 PM I'm happy to hear this good news, Rich. I know you love the place. I've told you that my brother has been with Trader Joe's for close to a decade now. He's really gone places, and he makes a lot of money. They really work their employees hard. If someone works there, and is lazy; they're gone, PRONTO. Trader Joe's will do well in this bad economy because you get a real bang for your buck. Happy shopping buddy! :)

It's beyond love my dear. I was just there this morning and bought some goodies for the office. A whole bunch of stuff for only $12. Any place else in my nabe and we'd be talking an easy $20. Yesterday I bought some kefir there for $2.79 - 21 cents cheaper than the sale price at Whole Foods.
And yes, they totally will do well in this bad economy. Why this new store is in an expensive area of NYC and it will thrive - TJ's prices can not be beat. People shop there in droves - as well they should.
Once when I was waitng on line I was kind of playful. I help up a jar of Better N Peanut Butter and said to the TJ gal facilitating the line - "quick let's play The Price Is Right - this is $3.99 here - how much do you think it's at D'Agostino's? ( a food chain here in NYC). She guessed $6.49. I said "very good guess - you're only 20 cents off - it was $6.29). I could go on with examples. The store is tdf - no kidding!!!!

I didn't realize that the prices at Trader Joe's were that good! Usually I buy my food from Whole Foods but this week I will go to the TJ near my home and see how much I can save.
Chocolate Moose 07-20-2010, 10:36 AM Everything at TJ is cheaper than WF. Sometimes you don't have the big selection, though.

Yes, the produce selection is definitely better at WF. I'm supposed to eat lots of fresh veggies so I got intrigued by the various cauliflower colors -orange, purple, the green - but only WF had them. Their 365 brand prices are really quite decent. BUT just take a stroll thru their cheese & appetizer section and you will easily spend 35% more than TJ's. If you're looking for stuff for a party - or goodies to bring into the office - NOBODY - and I mean NOBODY - beats TJ.:heart::heart:
