CHICAGO (AP) - The Rev. Jesse Jackson says Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert sees LeBron James as a "runaway slave" and that his comments after the forward decided to join the Miami Heat put the player in danger.

Shortly after James announced his decision Thursday night, Gilbert fired off an incendiary letter to Cleveland's fans, ripping the 25-year-old and promising to deliver a title before James wins one. He called James' decision "cowardly" and later told The Associated Press he believes James quit during a handful of Cavaliers playoff games.

Jackson says Gilbert's comments "personify a slave master mentality" and the owner should face a "challenge" from the league.

Messages were left Sunday night seeking comment from Gilbert, the Cavaliers, James and the NBA.

One thing I'll say is that I've never heard an NBA owner react like this when a player leaves the team.

The Cavs entered the NBA beginning in the 1970-71 season, so they've been in the league for 40 years, and they've only had two 60-win seasons... 2009 and 2010.

The Cavs have only had seven 50-win seasons (including the two 60 win teams), and Lebron was there for four of those.

They've been a .500+ team 19 times, six of those with Lebron. So they've been a winning team 6 out of 7 seasons with Lebron, but only 13 of the previous 33 seasons prior to his arrival.

Twice, they've only won 15 games in a season, and they only won 17 the year before Lebron arrived.

Lebron led them to two of their four Eastern Conference finals appearances, in 2007 and 2009, and their ONLY Finals appearance in 2007.

He was good for their franchise.

I know that criticizing a referee brings an automatic fine, but I'm not sure I've ever heard of a coach being fined for criticizing a player.

I was unemployed for awhile when i was in Cleveland and i wanted to kill myself because i got tired of sitting around waiting on a job to call me. I don't know why i didn't apply for unemployment at the time but i never did. I should've also applied for welfare and food stamps at the time and i didn't do that either because i would've been ashamed of being on welfare. I would be embarrassed if i went to the grocery store with food stamps. Most poor blacks aren't embarrassed about being on welfare but i would be embarrassed if i was on welfare. My mentality is different than poor blacks. Most of them would rather not be working and would rather sit on their asses and collect a welfare check and food stamps but not me. I'd rather have a job and have some cash. I hate jobs though because none of them have sympathy for unemployed people. So they don't give a damn about hiring you when you aren't working because they're gonna hire the person who's qualified. White america wonders why poor blacks become criminals to get money like selling drugs, robbing banks and robbing people. What else are they supposed to do when they can't get a job? Plus Cavs management wasn't making any moves this offseason to get Lebron some help and that's probably why he left. Catlover79 and MrCleveland, ya'll gotta admit that his teammates didn't help out that much in this season's playoffs. Lebron can't do it all by himself. Plus Mike Brown did some terrible coaching against Boston and he didn't play JJ Hickson and Daniel Gibson that much. So Mike is also to blame for them not getting to the finals this year.

Yes i admit that he was wrong for not telling Cavs management and the fans his decision before he went on tv and told the world. He should've made his decision in private like most athletes do. I do agree with Jesse Jackson that Lebron has the right to play for any team he wants and he shouldn't be forced to stay with Cleveland. Dan Gilbert can't force to him to be with Cleveland forever. Just because he's from Akron doesn't mean he has to play with Cleveland forever because he's from Ohio LOL. Ron Harper who was a former Cavs player is from Dayton, Ohio. So should he have played for Cleveland forever because he's from Ohio? LOL. Bernie Kosar is from Ohio. So does that mean he should've played for the Browns forever? LOL. I have heard that in lieu of paying Lebron, ESPN agreed to donate a bunch of money to some charities in exchange for the privilege of televising "the decision". If that's true, then at least maybe some good will come out of the whole ridiculous spectacle.

I also think that Lebron, after fulfilling his contractual obligations with the Cavs, certainly had the right to go wherever he thought would be best for him. Of course, if his contract required him to give his best effort at all times while on the court, then he probably didn't fulfill THAT part of the contract.

But, I don't recall him demanding to be traded during his time with the Cavs... he might have, but I don't remember that happening. Even Magic was asking for a possible trade after his 2nd season with the Lakers (and a little bit into his 3rd season as well). The Lakers wisely dismissed Paul Westhead instead and brought in someone slightly better, Pat Riley

But there's no question that it was classless of Lebron to not inform his former employer of his intention to leave. It's like quitting your job by simply not showing up when you're supposed to. No matter how I felt about an employer, I can't imagine not giving notice if I wanted to leave. But hey...that's just me.

I haven't liked ESPN for a really long time. One problem is that no one at ESPN ever played the game, so they're all in awe when they're in the presence of a pro athlete. And they try to be friends with the ball players rather than reporting objectively about them. So not only is journalism dead in world news, it's also dead in sports as well. Besides that, whatever reporting ESPN attempts to do is done on a high school level anyway. It's both really boring and really annoying.

I'd enjoy their Sunday NFL pre game broadcast if it wasn't for the presence of Chris Berman and Tom Jackson. So I can't even watch that (I watch the FOX guys, Bradshow, Howie Long and company)

I do enjoy Pardon the Interruption (with Tony K and Mike W)and Around the Horn, although I usually have to get the podcasts... and now they have that idiotic "Sports Nation", further dumbing down an already dumbed-down network.
