Carl was never seen again because remember Esther Rolle left the show after season 4?? So since that was the case the actor Moses Gunn went on with his life and did other things. He wasn't siting around doing nothing until season and said-"I can rejoin Good Times with Esther"_LOL
So they had to act like Carl never existed in season 6 because the actor was no longer available to play the part

As far I recall, Ester did not want to work with Moses Gunn and was against the Carl and Florida marriage, saying it was too soon and also she didn't feel the chemistry was there. Her condition upon returning to the series (besides the JJ character becoming more mature and responsible) was that Carl would be erased. The character of Florida did mention Carl ONCE early on when she gave Michael his gift--saying it was from her and Carl. But nada after that. A simple explanation that Carl stayed behind for his health or that he succumbed to the cancer he was fighting would have been a quick closure.

Esther didn't feel that Florida would have married an athiest (she was a devout Christian) and just move away from her family like that.
I've always thought they could have really done some interesting things with the Carl character, but they just rushed it along too quick. You wonder if the Carl story was sort of like a final straw for Esther Rolle on top of all her of dissatisfaction with the JJ character?
