"Supernatural" at Comic-Con: Monsters, Anime and Shooting Stuff in the Face

Ballroom 20 was buzzing with anticipation early Sunday morning, when the cast and producers of "Supernatural" made an eagerly-awaited appearance to answer questions about the show's sixth season at Comic-Con.

Series leads Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki were joined by recurring guest stars Misha Collins and Jim Beaver, as well as creator Eric Kripke, writer-producer Ben Edlund and newly promoted showrunner Sera Gamble.

To kick things off, Ackles took to the stage to present a sneak-peek of the first five minutes of his directorial debut, episode 604, entitled 'Weekend at Bobby's'.

The teaser for 604 features fan-favorite character Bobby (Beaver), as he attempts to summon the demon Crowley (Mark Sheppard) who owns the contract to Bobby's soul.

Crowley appears thanks to Bobby's ritual, but when Bobby demands to have his soul back, the demon informs him that he should've read the fine-print on the contract; Crowley is only obligated to make "best efforts" to return Bobby's soul, which he's decided that he's done -- so Bobby has ten years before Crowley comes to collect on the deal.

But wait -- Bobby reveals a devil's trap painted on the floor that's only visible in blacklight, and Crowley unfortunately appeared right inside it. Bobby threatens to leave Crowley in the trap until he returns the hunter's soul, but Crowley summons his Hell Hound, which may just compel Bobby to change his mind -- the clip ends with Bobby nose-to-nose with the invisible beast.

-- Kripke describes his new role as "the pain in Sera and Bob [Singer]'s asses, I'm like delightful, fuzzy hemorrhoids."

He's been consulted on every episode thus far (they're filming episode three but have written to six or seven) and given notes; he'll still be actively involved, perhaps more actively than Gamble or Singer would prefer, as he told us in the press room.

-- Gamble says that there will be more monsters this season than previously, they "just want to shoot monsters in the face!" But there will also be mythology that holds the season together.

-- Ackles describes his experience directing as "a lot different than I was used to," since he had grown comfortable with viewing things as an actor and not with a director's eye.

He says that he still doesn't consider himself a director, just that he was "very lucky".

-- When asked about Castiel's role in the new season, Collins explained that Castiel will be on clean-up detail in heaven -- the leadership is in dissaray, which upsets Castiel.

-- Edlund, who is known for writing some of "Supernatural's" more offbeat episodes, says that he's working on pitching an episode with fairies, where the Winchesters might have to fight a tiny pinprick of light that's Tinkerbell;

"I see Jensen with a light floating towards him and him saying, 'It's sooo beautiful...'" Edlund laughs.

-- When asked what it was like to direct himself, Ackles says he was glad that he didn't have to convince himself to do anything.

Beaver interjects that he never felt more secure or well-guided as an actor than he did being directed by Jensen.

-- Sera Gamble confirms that "Supernatural" has unfortunately lost the phenomenally talented Jeremy Carver as a staff writer, since he and his wife are exec-producing the "Being Human" US remake. Noooo!

-- Edlund reveals that we've never seen monsters in quite the same way as we'll see them in season 6, where we'll delve into the physics of these creatures and how they came to be.

The monsters of the "Supernatural" universe will be more active than ever before, Collins adds, hinting that the reason for their activity is tied into something that Castiel is involved with, as are the forces of both heaven and hell.

-- On the subject of romance: Dean starts out in a relationship with Lisa and a family -- "he has a life and a marriage that he's trying to protect," Edlund says.

While Sam will be "a little bit more engaging with outside people -- and specifically women, more-so than he ever has before."

-- The first episode Edlund has written this season deals with the return of Castiel, which will either be episode six or three, since the order has been shuffled to accomodate Ackles' directing schedule.

We'll see Castiel reuniting with the Winchesters, and the return of Archangel Raphael.

-- The typically cagey Collins teases that Castiel may have been emotionally reset since being resurrected and is trying to step up into the role of "boss of heaven."

He doesn't think that we'll see Castiel in the same capacity as last season (no more "backseat of the Impala sidekick" Castiel), and at times his mission might run counter to Sam and Dean's mission.

-- Padalecki says Sam is a different type of Sam this season; his conscience and emotion will no longer stop him from doing the job. He likens season six Sam to season one Dean -- shoot first, ask questions later.

This will concern Dean and make him question whether Sam has become heartless.
