View Full Version : TV Guide Network
SpenceOlchin 07-10-2010, 09:40 PM Anybody actually watch this station? Over the last few years they have become a channel similar to E! and have even acquired some actual programs like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Just Shoot Me and Ugly Betty. They still have listings, but they're pushed to the bottom of the screen.
JamesG 07-10-2010, 10:33 PM I see no point when I can click the "Guide" button on my remote and see all the channels and programming that way. It's also in my control without having to watch a scrolling thing.
SpenceOlchin 07-11-2010, 03:24 PM I agree with you on the scrolling guide. Technology has made a scrolling guide station obsolete and TV Guide realizes that. I was just curious to see if anybody watched any actual programs on this channel? They show Curb Your Enthusiasm four nights a week, as well as other shows like Ugly Betty, Punk'd and American Idol Rewind. Plus, they even show movies. It appears that they are trying to become an actual channel, rather than just telling you what's on tv. I'd be curious to see what the ratings are since they've made the change?

Even with that, I still see no need for that channel.
All of the shows I watch I either watch live, DVR, or pick up the DVDs.
Regarding movies, I have over 1000 channels and movies constantly play 24/7.
So yeah, I don't need or watch TV Guide Network.
SpenceOlchin 07-11-2010, 05:32 PM Ok, fair enough.
TVFactFan 07-11-2010, 05:45 PM When they get rid of that SCROLLING BULLSH*T at the bottom I may think about it
SpenceOlchin 07-11-2010, 06:26 PM I thought I read somewhere that they were phasing out the scrolling guide, but perhaps they have to keep it around due to contracts with cable companies? However, I don't see how anybody could find it remotely useful anymore. I can find out channel listings quicker either by my "Guide" button or by going online.

That Scroll thing is so 2001-LOL
megamanj2004 07-11-2010, 07:28 PM Heck no!
TV Guide has done so many bastardized things I couldn't even imagine.
1). The scrolling guide thing got tainted by the early 2000s
2). They ruined Jump the Shark.com website
3). Their channel is a poor man's version of E!, interspersed w/ reruns of reality garbage.

You just made me remember how good the scroll listing was back in the early 2000s. Although some didn't like the yellow color scheme. Here's a small sample:

Maybe I'm a bit of a cable tv nerd, but I love the music that they used to play:

I was defintely into it back then
I think what's sadder than seeing how TV Guide was back then is seeing the listings for the cable channels then. :(

OMG, the yellow scroller what good memories!!!
I remember we'd always be pissed because it only showed an hour and a half and we wanted to know what was on N@N the entire night.
Also, I remember how the weather would show up before all the channel listings started to go through again so we'd always want to see the weather.
Funny how dependent we were on TV Guide Channel back then for TV listings.
SpenceOlchin 07-13-2010, 01:01 PM Man, Youtube has just about everything. :)
Someone posted the last few minutes of Prevue Guide and the switchover to TV Guide. I remember a bit of the blue scrolling guide. This is from 2/1/99.

Yeah I think that cable channels took more risks back then. While there are still a few good ones around (Turner Classic Movies, Encore Westerns etc.), most seem to show a lot of the same shows nowadays. Seinfeld, Family Guy, Friends, Raymond, Frasier, Roseanne etc. play on many channels in my area, while the classics play on a select few (TV Land, Hallmark Channel, sometimes WPIX). I know that networks like WGN America, THIS TV and Retro TV play classics, but they aren't carried by Comcast in Ocean County yet. I also hate how reality tv has transformed many cable channels into utter trash.
