I have been reading articles that said he was heavily on drugs and alcohol which led to his bitter battles with NBC. Is that true? If so, do you think Redd Foxx was Solely responsible for ruining a good thing?

View Full Version : Was Redd Foxx Solely Responsible For Destroying 'Sanford & Son' Brian Damage 07-10-2010, 08:35 PM I have been reading articles that said he was heavily on drugs and alcohol which led to his bitter battles with NBC. Is that true? If so, do you think Redd Foxx was Solely responsible for ruining a good thing? Mr. Television 07-10-2010, 09:39 PM I don't know if any of that was true. It never seemed to interfere with the show's success. S&S probably only had a couple of seasons left anyway. I do think that Redd took his success for granted over there though. He just quit the show with no second thoughts. He spent the rest of his life trying to get it back including playing Fred again but it never worked. LOL  Mr. Television 07-10-2010, 09:58 PM What the heck was it with 70's stars and their battles with the networks?!? LOL  I don't know. I know Carroll O'Connor was having big battles with them. Thank God they didn't try to replace him. I wonder if t NBC was thinking of replacing Fred with Grady? I liked Grady but that would have been a big mistake. Brian Damage 07-10-2010, 10:30 PM I don't know. I know Carroll O'Connor was having big battles with them. Did the Grady spinoff happen before or after Whitman Mayo replaced Redd for a couple of episodes on Sanford & Son? Mr. Television 07-10-2010, 10:36 PM I agree, I wonder the timelines of this situation. Did the Grady spinoff happen before or after Whitman Mayo replaced Redd for a couple of episodes on Sanford & Son? I think it was after. Maybe he got the spinoff because ratings didn't drop when he replaced Redd. Mr. Television 07-10-2010, 10:43 PM It's funny. I was just a kid when Redd held out. I had no idea what was going on. I just remember seeing Grady taking care of Lamont but Redd was still on the theme song so I thought nothing of it. Nowadays with all the media, I would have known immediately. catlover79 07-11-2010, 01:54 AM Yeah, the Grady spinoff was in 1975, after Redd Foxx had returned to S&S. If so, do you think Redd Foxx was Solely responsible for ruining a good thing? Yes because the show was number 2 in the country when he left and it was never ever the same again.
