Regrets? Chris Columbus has a few. “I learned a big lesson way back when we did Home Alone because when I cast that I wasn’t really looking at the kid’s family life,” the director admits in a new interview with the Coventry Telegraph. “I was casting a kid who truly had a troubled family life. I don’t think it worked out for him or his family. When I did [Harry Potter], I realized that you really have to cast the family as well, and look at their parents, and those Potter kids have turned out pretty well.”

Very true, especially after seeing Culkin throw his career away the way he did.

At least his brother Kieran (who co-starred in the first 2 HA movies) has been able to build up a very decent filmography - and I have never heard of him being in trouble of any kind.

That is true, but you have to consider that Macaulay was the biggest thing in the early 90's. Also, if I am not mistaken, didn't he take his parents to court for stealing money? Or am I thinking of Gary Coleman? lol

Oh, yes - I'm about the same age as Macauley and I remember very well how huge he was back in the early/mid 90s. Plus, you're right about his money situation. Check this out:

Something funny I remember about this time was that as a kid he was mostly known for children/family films and he threw everyone for a loop when he played that sadistic child in The Good Son.

He did that in 1993, a year after Home Alone 2, so almost every kid knew him as the "Home Alone kid".

I remember being in video stores and seeing some kids excited to see his face on the box only to be told by their parents and the clerk that it's a "grown-up movie" and the kids had a hard time understanding that.

They just saw the "Home Alone kid" on the box.

I don't know if it's true or not but I seem to remember there was some controversy at the time in the news about this because he was very recognized by kids and then he goes for an R-rated thriller.

Maybe he was acting out some steam from his own home life in the making of that movie.

lol, maybe...

After that it was The Nutcracker, Getting Even with Dad, and Richie Rich.

That seems to be his real "oddball movie" in the middle of all kiddie flicks.

...and probably the only one that really delved into his dark side.

But he was awesome in it nonetheless and I cant picture anyone else being that role

But yeah I remember when The Good Son was out, and yeah doing that ****ed his career up, like JamesG said

Not to mention that it was his co-star, Elijah Wood - who really became the breakout star after that movie!!

True! But not until LOTR which was 8 years later

Speaking of him, Wood hasn't been around much (anything big) in recent years after LOTR.

After LOTR I saw him in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Sin City which was in 2005.

They better get on track with The Hobbit movie.

I don't know why Chris would say that about Macaulay because he was the best person to play that character in Home Alone. Ya'll can't expect actors to play the same character all the time. That's why they're called actors LOL. Macaulay's acting in The Good Son was good. It was definitely different than playing a good kid in Home Alone 1 and 2. It's a shame his career turned bad after Home Alone movies.
