View Full Version : The Black Truck
Jason K 07-05-2010, 02:17 PM Sorry if this topic already exists but due to the lack of victim or suspect name, it's hard to search for.
Does anyone have any updates on the story of the black pickup truck that taunted motorists and eventually shot a woman, "Carol," in the face? She survived and was able to provide a description for a police sketch. Coupled with the fact other people were taunted by the truck makes me somewhat hopeful this guy was eventually caught.
This is one of the scariest episodes to me because it takes place in broad daylight.
justins5256 07-05-2010, 03:11 PM Yes, that was a memorable one.
Carol's real name is Janice Katilius.
Here are some articles I found on the case a few years back...

Unfortunately, I don't believe her assailant was ever identified. Sadly, I would imagine this is a cold case these days.
I don't know if Spike ever shows it, but I think it would be a good candidate for rebroadcast as it might jog some memories.
XCalibur 07-08-2010, 06:36 PM This was one of the most senseless crimes I ever heard of. And puzzling. I mean there was no robbery, no sexual assault, he didn't know or have a grudge against the victim. I mean what this clown just woke up one day and decided what the hell, I'll just bust a cap in someone today?
Extremely bizarre and senseless crime. Unless there has been other similar attacks, its strange that some guy just came out of nowhere, shot someone, and dissapeared off the face of the Earth.
One of the most surprising things for me was how many similar black trucks they said were in the sate of Connetticut, they said there were 200,000 of them. Hell I didn't think there were 200,000 people in Connetticut. If anyone is from there I apologize I don't mean to offend anyone, its just surprising in that small of a state you'd have 200,000 vehicles of that kind.

Yeah, it's a very scary case. It makes me wonder if the shooter wasn't suffering some serious mental illness. Just as you said, he literally came out of nowhere, for seemingly no reason. The whole deal with the taunting people by driving on and off the road is really bizarre, too.
I think the most probable deal with the truck is that it was only identified as a black Ford truck, with black-wall tires, running board, flared wheel wells. Nothing about a model or year was mentioned--it could've been a 1977 F-15, a 1984 F-250, etc. Given the sheer number of vehicles probably fitting that description without regard for year or model, the volume could be exponentially large.

Yes, you could be right on the truck theory.
Mental illness is possible, he may have even been on some kind of drugs.
It kind of puts me in mind of the Jay Durham case, the guy who was attacked by the trucker, senseless road violence. There was another case to, can't remember the names maybe you do. The guy who got in a fender bender went out to ask the man in the other car if he was allright, it was a tall kind of well dressed black man I believe. The nut job shot him.
What is it about being out on the highway that just puts nastiness in some people? Road rage is a big problem in our country.
Although I'm not certain the black truck and Jay Durham could be classified as road rage cases since we aren't certain what the motives for these crimes are. But its still highway violence.

David Hurley. Saw that segment just the other night.

K thanks. I remembered the segment but couldn't recall the dude's name for a thousand dollars.
But that was a clear cut case of road rage gone to far. The black truck case and the Jay Durham one the motives weren't clear.

I can't remember if the board ever came to a consensus whether the Jay Durham case was intentional. I think there was some speculation that it was a case of an under-rested truck driver falling asleep at the wheel, who didn't realize he hit a motorcycle or the rider upon it until he'd jolted awake.
I'm not sure how I feel about it now. At the very least, the driver was extremely careless. If I had fallen asleep while driving a truck and inadvertently hit a motorcycle, I'd want to ensure absolutely that there was no rider on it and report the incident before I took off down the interstate.

I don't know. I've aways wondered if maybe he shot David because he had something to hide (drugs, he was wanted, stolen car, less likely: a body?, etc.) and the last thing he needed was a state trooper coming to investigate the scene. The only thing that doesn't make sense about that theory is why he would stop in the first place, unless he was trying to silence any possible witness.
It could have been road rage, but I can't let go of feelings there's something more to that case that only the driver knew about.

Thats very possible. The way UM did the reenactment it appeared to be road rage. It does seem bizarre that someone would just fly off the handle over an accident and kill someone. But it can happen.
There are a lot of overzealous self important people out there who are simply intolerant of any disturbance or intrusion of their routine. Remember the Adam Emory case?
I can believe its possible because I've seen even ordinarily nice people really become nasty on the highway. Its a strange phenomenon for sure. Highway accidents being the leading cause of death in our country may have something to do with it. And anyone whose ever been involved in an accident knows how scary it can be.
Of course not everyone in an accident flies off the handle and shoots someone. But if you got someone who has other problems to begin with it can be a definite catalyst to violence.

Meh.......... I don't know. I thought about the same thing at first, but you got to figure surely the driver would have stopped before he did if that were the case, he pushed Jay along for a good distance and he never stopped until Jay jumped off. The possibility was never considered on the segment, of course that could just be the show wanting to make the whole thing dramatic, but they interviewed Jay at length and he seemed pretty confident it was intentional. Of course being crippled for life can make someone pretty angry and maybe not give them the best judgement.
If indeed it was intentional, I have always wondered what the motive could have been. I think its possible this guy could have had a some kind of run in with bad bikers and took it out on poor Jay. Its possible he might have even mistaken Jay for someone else. Difficult to say. But I have to figure if Jay had any enemies who were truckers, that would have been an immediate red flag.

oh yeah, I remember that discussion. For me, it was intentional, case closed.
1. Jay's motorcycle was screeching on the pavement, coupled with the screams and yells I'm sure Jay was making, unlikely somebody could have slept through that. Jay was dragged for quite a while.
2. the semi was picking up speed, and the driver attempted to ram Jay into another semi that was in front of both of them.
3. It is impossible to drive a semi while you are sleeping and not either decelerate or run it off the road.
Plus the fact that the driver just left Jay for dead on the side of the road. Had it been an accident, the driver would have been more likely to stop and attempt to help Jay. Not saying for sure he would have, but more likely.

I'm inclined to agree, but that leaves the question what could the motive have been?
Its like I said, if Jay had any enemies who were truckers, seems like that would raise an immediate red flag.
But I suppose we are getting off topic as this has to do with the black truck case.
mwcarolina 10-18-2010, 11:49 PM this case is a senseless case, kinda like the crime that happened in NC where these teenage black men got hit by another guys car and their car flipped and at least one, maybe two died from that. It seems like these cases are strange road rage cases and they are hard to solve.

One died, another lost his legs, the last got only minor injuries.
I'm surprised there were no composite sketch of the blond woman who was with that greasy redneck inside that car. She would have been a person of interest.
SageSlowdive 10-20-2010, 09:30 PM  I was on a country road today and actually got behind a black truck. I was waiting for the truck to turn around in front of me, but turns out it was just a little old lady :eek2:
Zlatko 10-23-2010, 05:28 PM Hmm...it's a bit strange that the truck driver attacked the woman behind him. The fact that the truck driver was driving like a lunatic leads me to think he was on strong drugs. (heroine, meth, etc) A lot of those drugs could lead to more aggressive behavior; the Dorothy Donovan case is a good example of this.
kadrmas15 10-23-2010, 06:26 PM Here is something weird and I wish I had a camera or a camera phone. But about a week ago or so, I was driving through the Lowe's parking lot in Owatonna, Minnesota, on my way to work at Wal-Mart right next door. Anyway, I saw in the Lowe's parking lot a black ford truck that looked EXACTLY like the truck in this segment. It gave me goosebumps to see it because I had never seen a truck like that in person with my own two eyes before.
