Coca-Cola may have discontinued Vanilla Diet Coke, but a Germantown woman arrested Thursday apparently just couldn't get enough.

Sheriff's deputies responded to a call about a woman suspiciously slumped over the steering wheel in a white car parked in front of Arlington Middle School. Kelly Moss, 48, was in the driver's seat of the vehicle, partially parked on the school's driveway and the sidewalk, officers said.

According to an affidavit, Moss's speech was slurred and fragmented and she was unable to stand or walk without assistance. She did not comply with field sobriety and blood-alcohol tests.

An officer noticed partially empty bottles of vanilla extract, labeled as 35 percent alcohol by volume, and Diet Coke in the front seat, and they said they smelled a strong vanilla odor on the woman's breath. A grocery receipt found in the vehicle listed two 8-ounce bottles of vanilla extract, purchased Wednesday.

Moss is charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants and refusing to submit to a blood-alcohol test. This is her third DUI arrest, records show, and she was being held on $4,000 bond pending a hearing today.

Vanilla Extract??
We once had a guy steal some and drink it outside of the grocery store I work at. He was lying down in the parking lot so we called the cops, then they had to call an ambulance because he was so drunk he literally could not stand up. We do have a lady who used to buy a lot of vanilla extract and we always wondered if she baked alot or just used it to get drunk.

According to that article, she had 2 bottles of vanilla extract in her car - and each bottle contained a whopping 35% alcohol. That would give most anyone a buzz!!!   Same goes for OTC medicines like Nyquil - those are chock full of alcohol.

Mouthwash also contains alcohol.

As does some perfumes, colognes, aftershaves...

I heard that many desperate alcoholic soldiers during WWII raided their fellow troop's aftershaves because they needed the alcohol.

An old-timer in my neighborhood told me that story, saying he had to put a lock on his trunk because soldiers were looking for alcohol from anything.

She must have been watching the Family Ties Season 2 dvd set episode (Say Uncle). Tom Hanks played Uncle Ned. Uncle Ned drank a bottle of Vanilla Extract in front of Alex.

Oh my gosh, you're so right, Jenny!! I'd totally forgotten about that. Good catch!!! Of course, remember Tom Hanks' immortal line from the embezzling episode: "The falcon has landed and the fat man walks alone."

It's so hard to believe he only appeared in two episodes. He has to be by far the best known of all the guest stars on FT.

There was an 88-year-old woman named Gladys who called into Ellen's talk show. The next day Ellen returned the call. Ellen tried to get Gladys to come to her show because she's so funny, but Gladys doesn't like to travel. She made a comment about being stopped for "having a little Listerine." She's also the same wonan who told Ellen, "I love Jesus, but I drink a little."

Yeah, and Uncle Ned tells Alex to "remember don't drink and bake."

This reminds me of the episode of Mama's Family where Mama takes home made tonic to her CLL (Church Ladies Leauge) meeting and the women get drunk. It contained vanilla extract.
Mama: You don't know how much I put in.
Iola: Neither do you!

^ I haven't seen that ep of Mama's Family, but it does sound very funny. I once tasted a tiny drop of vanilla extract. BLECCCH!!!   Why anyone would want to drink it, even just to get a buzz, is beyond me.

That's probably why the lady in this story mixed it with diet coke!

I looooooooove rum with coke... So yummy. I should try rum, vanilla AND coke... Especially on a night when I wanna get ****ty (which is like once a year nowadays.).

Anyway. Yeah. Alcoholics who hit rock-bottom will go for ANYTHING with alcohol in it for a buzz, especially if they're super-broke. I've met my share of these people...

Re: the Mama's Family ep, I have a press kit pic from that ep... Very funny, as I recall. :)

That's true about the alcoholics - I just hope this woman will get the help she needs.
