PROVINCETOWN, Mass. (AP) - A new policy in one public school district that makes condoms available to all students, even those in elementary school, is drawing criticism from some who say it goes too far.

Provincetown School Board Chairman Peter Grosso says because there is no set age when sexual activity starts, the committee decided not to set an age for condom availability.

Under the policy, any student requesting a condom from a school nurse must first receive counseling, which includes information on abstinence. The policy does not require the school to contact parents.

The policy was approved by Provincetown's school committee June 10. It takes effect in the fall.

Kris Mineau, president of the conservative Massachusetts Family Institute, calls the idea absurd.

Seriously though, I am in favor of providing teens with condoms if it means they will be more responsible when it comes to sex. They are going to do what they are going to do despite adult intervention, so we might as well help them stay safe. However, elementary school kids are still greatly influenced by the adults around them and having schools condone giving condoms to an 11 or 12 year old is absurd. I would be very concerned about the safety and well-being of a child that young coming in and asking for condoms and I would feel it necessary to contact the child's parents and possibly social services. I know of an incident at a local elementary school where they had a 5th grade girl become pregnant. It was not because she was having sex with another 5th grader. That is usually the case when children that young are taking part in sexual activity and that is one reason I would be very concerned. Also, if a school does have 5th graders having sex with each other they have a whole other set of problems that need to be addressed and so giving out free condoms is not the answer!

I heard on the local news just now that the condoms would be available to kids as young as FIVE!!!!!! :eek: Now THAT is beyond ridiculous!!! :mad: :mad: :mad:

The sad fact is though kids are having sex younger and younger, even as young as 10 and 11, the sooner people start educating them, the more I think it will help.

At the age of five I was more concerned with the prize in the cereal box and I can never recall getting a water balloon. :mad:

I think there's something seriuosly wrong with handing out condoms to five year olds. Five year olds don't have sex. If there are any five year olds having sex then obviously there's a major problem and they're going to need much more than a condom. They're going to need counseling.

As far as handing them out to elementary students, that surprises me, but then again I know they give (or used to) sex education discussion to boys and girls. They tell the girls about periods, using pads etc. I remember in fourth grade one day our class was given that 'talk'. They showed us the different things like pads, condoms, etc. They didn't give them out though. Now that was back in 1989/1990 school year. I can only imagine what they do and say now days.

While in college in a class I took in the human sciences department had a group of students give a presentation for their report. They chose to speak on safe sex. They actually had samples of condoms. I thought the professor Dr. Saracino was going to have a heart attack. She was very upset that the group was handing out the samples. She made them collect the samples back. She said she didn't want to get in trouble.

So if it's a problem giving them out at the college level, then I think it should be a major problem giving them out to elementary students, most of whom, are still pre-pubescent.

Wow things sure have changed. When I was in elementary school nobody talked to us about sex. I didn't even know what sex was. lol When I got to Junior High though, that's what everyone talked about. It was like a diferent world. We never had any sex-ed classes there either though. In fact I didn't have any until High School.

Yeah, our class got the big sex talk in 6th grade. They took us to the Health Museum in Cleveland, split up the boys and girls, and took it from there. But all they talked about was the anatomy and the act itself. They did mention how females get pregnant, and they did talk about STDs. But I don't recall them talking about contraception.

It's a shame that one group wants to prevent McDonalds from putting toys in happy meals because it promotes childhood obesity while another group wants to give raincoats to five-year olds to promote safe sex. Someone hasn't got their priorities straight somewhere. I would much rather a kid of mine get a toy in a happy meal than to bring home a balloon and say "Hey dad, look what they gave us at school today." :rolleyes:

Yeah, 5 is a bit absurd. What does a 5 year old need a condom for? (I could say some jokes here.. but I won't)

I say the age to start handing them out should be at least 13 or 14.

Just example #94,739,576,832,659,468 of how screwed up society is today. My mother said as we were watching this report that she would be storming the office of the principal, Board of Education, etc. if this had happened when my siblings and I were in school.

Another scary thing is that my oldest nephew just turned 4 - he starts pre-school in the fall. I can only imagine what would happen if he was given condoms. I CAN, however, imagine my sister's and mother's heads exploding!!!! :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:
