What do Neil Patrick Harris, Oprah Winfrey, Buddy Holly and the Muppets have in common?

They're all getting stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next year.

Once again, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced the list of celebrities getting a plaque on the famous Los Angeles sidewalk.

"It was not an easy job to winnow down the extra-large number of nominations this year to reach these 30 names," said John Pavlik, chair of the Hollywood Walk of Fame Committee, "but the placement of stars for these famous celebrities will give fans and tourists some fun and exciting close encounters next year."

The stars include a rare family dedication, when three stars will be placed during the same ceremony for actors Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd and their daughter Laura Dern.

On the motion picture side, Penelope Cruz, Ed Harris, the Muppets, Kenny Ortega, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ridley Scott, Sissy Spacek, Donald Sutherland and Reese Witherspoon will also receive honors.

On the TV side, in addition to Winfrey and Harris, stars will go to Danny DeVito, Tina Fey, Simon Fuller, John Langley, Ed O'Neill and John Wells.

Among recording artists, Melissa Etheridge, Los Tigres Del Norte, Rascal Flatts, Go-Go's, Slash, Will i. Am and Bebe & Cece Winans. Plus, there's posthumous stars going to Holly and Louis Prima

Los Angeles - American actor Danny DeVito, known for his Emmy-winning role on Taxi and his turn as Batman's nemesis The Penguin on the big screen, was honoured on Thursday with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The 66-year-old actor, who divides his time between films and television and is also an acclaimed director, received the 2 445th star on the famous sidewalk in Los Angeles.

“The question is, do I get to take this home or do we leave it here?” joked DeVito of his star.

“Or do I move into this store over here, and every day I come and polish it?” he added.

It is tradition for the honouree to be the first person to step on the star, and DeVito - who has been posting pictures of his so-called 'Troll Foot' on Twitter - took off his shoe and sock before stepping barefoot on the star.

Born in November 1944 in New Jersey, DeVito has over the years nurtured a flourishing film and television career with roles in the series Taxi, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Batman Returns and L.A. Confidential.

He has also found success behind the camera, notably for directing The War of the Roses and Throw Momma From the Train.

DeVito is married to the actress Rhea Perlman, who attended Thursday's ceremony along with the couple's three children. - Sapa-AFP
