At the multiplex this weekend, The Karate Kid and The A-Team topped the box office. You might almost think we are reliving the 1980’s. The success of The Karate Kid probably has Hollywood on a search for more 1980’s/early 1990’s titles to remake, and Pajiba is reporting that a remake of Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead is in development with producer Mark Gordon.

Here is the plot synopsis from the original:

“Single Mother goes away for the summer. The kids are first delighted but then find that Mom has hired the sitter from hell to stay with them. When the sitter dies of a sudden coronary they deposit the body at a mortuary only to discover all their Summer expense money was in her purse. The kids must find a way to survive the summer without mom or her money. This means actual work!”

While I like the 1980’s original, I really don’t believe the story warrants a remake. It’s one of those movies that worked because of the combination of reasons you couldn’t have predicted, and for me — it is a movie of its time (much like director Stephen Herek’s other films Bill & Ted or The Mighty Ducks).

The biggest redeeming feature of the original movie was the presence of Christina Applegate. Unless they hit another casting home run like that the remake will be a dud!

The original is a cult classic of sorts to my generation, so the thought of a remake is quite repulsive to me.

I loved that movie as a kid but I don't think it needs a remake.
