I always thought he looked better without the beard, but his beard was classic so he always should've KEPT it.

Very few men look good in a beard, and I don't think Michael Gross was one of them. I think he was very handsome, clean shaven.

I'm looking at the dvd covers at the top of the page, & its soo Funny how Steven looked in the 1st DVD cover compared to the later dvds where he looked like "himself"! :lol:

I can't get the picture to post, but I did find a Michael Gross website. He doesn't have a beard anymore but he looks pretty good! Very handsome, actually! The site has a bunch of pictures, but I'm not sure which ones are the most current.

I perfer Steven with a beard myself. :)

I actually think he looks more handsome without a beard -- most men do -- but I'm more comfortable seeing him with the whiskers because I'm more used to him that way. I also think the beard gives him a somewhat more "fatherly" appearance, a more amiable quality, by softening the angularity of his face.

I started watching Season 1 (took the DVD out of the library) and he did look pretty-good clean-shaven, too. I think they may have had Michael Gross grow the beard to look older. After all, he and Meredith Baxter were only in their mid-30s when they started the show - playing parents to teenagers. He looked fine either way.

Personally I liked Steven with the beard, although, he looked more like a 60's hippie when he was clean shaven.

Michael Gross sans the beard actually looked younger. However, it's really weird watching the first season since I'm more accustomed to seeing Steven with a beard. It's like on Star Trek: The Next Generation, where Jonathon Frakes was only clean-shaven during the first season.

Actually what happened was that Michael Gross grew the beard for an off-Broadway play in-between Seasons 1 and 2. When it came time to start shooting Family Ties again, he told the producers that he has this beard. The thinking was that Steven Keaton afterall, was supposed to be a former hippie from the '60s (therefore, it seemed kind of odd that he would so clean-cut and conservative looking). After a few rehearsals with the beard, the producers told Michael that he could keep it.

With the beard, it's a part of his character!
