i'm concerned that there may be music rights issues involved with season 2 as there was with season 1 (they couldnt use the original what a wonderful world theme). is there any music in season 2 to be concerned with? i'm also worried about the usual sales dip that happens with tv shows on dvd and that this may happen with family matters.

i hope they've cleared the music rights for the whole series as well as hope that what a wonderful world was the only issue with the season one dvd...

The thing with this show is..there's music clearance issues thruought just about the entire series. "What A Wonderful World" is probably one of the costlier songs to clear if you want to use it so I can see why they couldn't do it especially for season 1. Through the course of the series, if Carl isn't outright singing a song at some point he's humming a lot of songs. Problem is, even if he's singing part of a song or humming part of it they still have to clear the rights to the songs in question. I think the worst of the music clearance issues are done with. I noticed several songs they WERE able to clear for Season 1 and that surprised me!

But make no mistake, there are going to be some other music clearances involved over the course of the rest of the series. I did my part and bought Season 1 and I sincerely hope it's doing well enough to warrant a release of Season 2.

what about artists making appearances such as missy elliott and new edition? do they have to clear that? and do they also have to clear it even if the artist doesn't sing but does guest star? thanks!

If the artists make an appearance and just guest star without singing, then there's usually no music clearances involved. In that case all they need is the artists ok and permission to be included in the episodes. Usually that's referred to as permission to use their likeness.

If the artists are both guest starring AND singing then they sure do need to clear the songs in that case too! BUT if the artists give their ok to use their likeness in the episodes then clearing the songs is usually much much easier and faster than if they weren't guest starring. If they give their ok to use their likeness, they're usually almost always more than happy to cooperate and help clear the music they sing during their guest spots. Hope that helps!

I'd guess that we'll get season 2 either by the end of this year or early-mid next year because I was searching the sales for it today and through Barnes and Noble.com ALONE it's sold close to 12,000 copies. Compare that to Fresh Prince season 5. That alone on Barnes and Noble only sold 3,000 copies. As for Urkel, I don't fear that we have to worry about it selling. Where I live, EVERY store, INCLUDING walmart, has only 1 to 2 copies of the Urkel DVD or none at all. Before I got mine I was looking at my local Best Buy for it and they were out. They told me that they had 2 being private ordered.

That's good news. I'm sure we'll see season two by next June at the latest.

I like the season 1 DVD, almost everything is in tact, minus the Wonderful World opening and the teaser for episode four. I like season one, even though I know it's not as popular as seasons 2-7, it's one of my favorite seasons.

I also agree that season 1 wasn't that good.

I agree as well as season one wasn't that great either. I have yet to even get season 1 on DVD. I hope Season 2 comes out soon as well!

Yeah. I'm in the middle of watching season one now. (That's sort of why I got back to posting here after I've been MIA for quite a while.) Yeah, I wondered why they couldn't use the 'Wonderful World' theme. I wasn't aware that they didn't have permission to the music rights, though it was intact on 'The Muppet Show' DVD when Rowlf the Dog sang it to a puppy. That's kind of weird. I also agree that season one is not the best, especially considering that you have to wait 12 episodes, before you see Urkel. (Though they did have the Urkel opening in 'Rachel's First Date.' I wonder why they used it for that episode, but none of the other 'Urkel teaser' episodes.) I am looking forward to season two as well. But they might have the same problem with the music rights at they did with the 'Perfect Strangers' DVD. It seems like season 3 of that is still no where in sight.

Yeah, but I think it's better that they made an own theme song, instead of taking a song that already excisted.

True. 'What a Wonderful World' is a nice song, but it doesn't really fit for a sitcom like 'Family Matters,' especially later on with Urkel becoming a regular and the show becoming more fantasy based. Though there was a point where 'As Days Go By' started to not really fit the show's theme either, but that's a different story.

Yeah. But they stopped using theme song when the 7th season started. And it was around that time, the science fiction got a bit too much.

This show was good until the later years when it was rather terrible.Season 1 could kill the series as i reckon it wouldn't sale well being Urkel didn't come into to later.

Yeah, I agree about that. But in my opnion, the show got better in season 2, but a few seasons later and too much science fiction, and I think Jaleel White played too many parts.

Well, the big reason the the theme song when the 7th season started was because that was around the time sitcoms had their actual run times cut way down. So, they used just a title card for the first few seconds instead of the theme song so they could get right into the episode due to having less run time to work with.

A poster a few posts up commented on how they thought we'd see Season 2 on DVD by now pretty much and that's what I thought too. The thing I don't like when a studio decides to start releasing a series on DVD, especially the first season, is they don't tell us if the sets are meeting sale expectations or not. I understand why they cannot give exact numbers but there should be something set up somewhere with a listing of all current TV show DVD releases and their status as far as whether or not they're meeting sales expectations or not. It should be something like what TV Shows By the Numbers does, with their renewal index that's easy to understand. More smiley faces next to a show means it's either at or exceeding sales expectations and more likely to get further releases. The fewer the smileys the less likely. You should all remember too, in the case of Warner Bros., when they DO decide to commit to releasing an entire series, they are slowwwwww. Just look at Growing Pains! It was stalled for 2 YEARS and they just finally got Season 2 out last week! (Totally plan to buy that, btw). Locally, Family Matters seems to have sold great. Just a few copies per store from what I've seen and it seems like many places have had to re-stock it. But that's another tricky thing-how it's selling can vary greatly by area. My best guess is hopefully late summer at this point if not early fall but I'm thinking they are either satisfied with numbers or it's exceeded expectations.
