AKRON, Ohio -- A Summit County man is under arrest for putting a lit cigarette inside the gas tank of a police cruiser.
At around 1:30 a.m., Thursday, Akron police officers were patrolling the bars outside "Liberty Commons" on Weathervane Lane.
After the officers got out of their cruiser, they spotted someone tinkering with their gas tank.
As they got closer, they found a lit cigarette shoved inside. Fortunately, the officers caught it just in time.
"I think it's awful. They're here to serve a public service. People are down here to have fun," said employee Alan Bednarik.
Police say the suspect took off running, but officers arrested 22-year-old Eric Wixcey a short time later. Wixcey, of Bath, is charged with arson, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and molesting police property. Officers say he was highly intoxicated and was slurring his words at the time of his arrest.
"I'm glad it didn't end up in a tragedy," said Bednarik.
Wixcey was booked into the Summit County Jail.
According to the Akron Municipal Court docket, he is out on bond after an arraignment on Friday morning.
