Let Us Pause for a Moment of Slayer...
by Gregory Burkart
June 4, 2010

Sunday marks the fourth annual “International Day of Slayer,” and with such great cause to celebrate – thanks to the band's most excellent album World Painted Blood (one of FEARnet's Top 9 Music Events of 2009, I might add) and the return to touring for frontman Tom Araya after extensive back surgery – it's pretty much a musical imperative that you honor the day with much screaming and banging of heads.

Your own head, of course... I wouldn't recommend banging someone else's. Well, not without their permission... oh never mind...

It may not look as cool marking your calendar for this year's event as it was on June 6, 2006 (6/6/6) – the date of the first annual Day of Slayer – but it's still an important holiday in the minds of the metal faithful, who are encouraged by the holiday's organizers to stage “Slay-outs,” turning the world into a gigantic moshpit by blasting Slayer tracks at maximum volume – and, I might add, NEVER on headphones; that's a cardinal sin for which thee will be judged.

“Listen to Slayer at full blast in your car, in your home, at your place of employment, and in any public place you prefer,” the event sponsors declared in their official announcement.

They even petitioned the White House last year to have the holiday placed on the books permanently. “Heavy metal music is the central belief of a culture that exists among us,” they argue, “and Slayer is the perfect spokesperson.”

“I think it's awesome, and it's totally cool that fans have taken the time to maintain it,” Slayer guitarist Kerry King recently told AOL's NoiseCreep. “There are enough stupid holidays out there, so why not have one for us?”

You can show your support by visiting the International Day of Slayer website... and of course, by catching them live: after their much-touted Sonisphere “Big Four” appearance with Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax, the band will return to North America later this summer for the Carnage Tour.
