In a statement to Zap2it, Betty White, who co-starred with Rue McClanahan for seven seasons on "The Golden Girls," says of Rue's passing: "Rue was a close and dear friend. I treasured our relationship. It hurts more than I even thought it would, if that's possible."

Rue McClanahan passed away in the early morning hours on Thursday, June 3 after suffering a massive stroke. She had previously suffered a minor stroke earlier this year after undergoing bypass surgery. She was 76.

The Zap2it team is enormous fans of Rue's work and so saddened for her friends, family, fans and Betty White, the last remaining regular cast member of "The Golden Girls." Fellow "Golden Girls" Estelle Getty and Bea Arthur passed away in 2008 and 2009, respectively. We have posted a tribute to Rue's work on the show.

RIP, Rue McClanahan and our condolences to everyone who loved you. Thanks for the laughter.

Friends and co-stars of Rue McClanahan have begun pouring out their tributes to the late actress. Read below to see what some of the actress’ best pals had to say about the Golden Girl.
Betty White, who co-starred with McClanahan on Golden Girls: “Rue was a close and dear friend. I treasured our relationship. It hurts more than I even thought it would, if that’s possible.”
Paul Junger Witt, executive producer of Golden Girls: “When a series is on as long as we were, with the same unit of people who have worked together for seven to eight years, you do become a family. A loss becomes very personal. It’s a very sad day. When shows come to an end, that’s a period of mourning. But to lose the ladies that we have — we still have Betty, thank God, who’s a treasure. But it’s a real loss. The afterlife of the show has been so extraordinary. Women are still visiting [the show] in their living rooms all over the world. Watching the four of those ladies work was certainly the highlight of those years. Every day to get to watch these four consummate performers, there’s nothing like it. She was an intuitively funny person. She was a force of joy for all of us. And we miss her already.”
Dustin Hoffman, who starred alongside McClanahan in the Broadway production of Jimmy Shine: “I have fond memories of working with Rue on Broadway in the ’60s, and I am saddened by her passing. My thoughts are with her family and friends.”
Leslie Jordan, who co-starred with McClanahan on Logo’s Sordid Lives: The Series: “I got really close in the twilight of Rue’s life. She’s one of the true Southern ladies. She showed up in Shreveport, La. to play my mother on the series Sordid Lives with a portable sewing machine, and she wanted to make her own hats. She just said, ‘I just think that this lady would have made beautiful Sunday hats.’ We got so close, though, Rue and I. We did a tour of comedy from the show. She was in a wheelchair, I think after a hip replacement, and rather than stand-up comedy, she called it sit-down comedy. Honey, we wheeled her out [and] I thought we were going to have to get the hook! We said, ‘You have 20 minutes.’ Well, she had that audience on the palm of her hands. From the moment they wheeled her out. I thought, how are we going to get her off the stage? It was watching a master at her craft. She was Southern, and a storyteller, and she had a story for any occasion. Oh, she was something. One night, she came to me and said, ‘I just had a fight with my husband.’ I said, ‘About what, Rue?’ She was very upset, she said, ‘Well, we were watching Everyone Loves Raymond, and my husband said that he liked Patricia Heaton’s acting. And I said, yes, she’s a good actress, but her posture is terrible. And my husband said, “Oh, you always have something to say.” But I was just commenting that a lady should have good posture!’ So she’s fighting with her husband about Patricia Heaton’s posture. And I thought, that’s Rue right there. There are ways we handle ourselves. You can be a wonderful actress, but you have to have good posture as well. She was a lady, but she was a bawdy lady too. She could get down with the best of us. She was filthy. She will really be missed.”
Beth Grant, who starred with McClanahan in Sordid Lives: The Series, and Golden Girls: “I loved her so much. I did a play called Picnic in Los Angeles with her [years ago], and she played the mom. It was my first big break. And she was so kind to me. And we did an out-of-town try-out in Denver, and I had told her that when I was a little girl, I had always wanted to go to Mardi Gras, because a lot of my friends had gone, and they had come back with these crystal beads, and how I always wanted those crystal beads. So opening night in Denver, she gave me the most gorgeous crystal beads that you have ever seen. I still have them. And she had forgotten all about it. When we did Sordid Lives, I reminded her. For her to bring that magic to it by remembering this silly little story I told, it was so special. It sounds so cliche, but she was the consummate professional. She had the best timing in the world, playing Blanche — as a southerner, believe me — to perfection. Her timing was so great. You could just feel if there was a funny moment coming on, she could send out a vibe to let you know to hold or to jump in. She could lead you to good timing as well. She was a comic genius. She really was. In every way. I miss her so much right now. She’s a magical person to me. I’m going to wear

That is so ironic because in the episode when Rose had a heart attack, Blanche said "What if Rose had a stroke?" then Blanche died from a stoke, so ironic! Rest in peace, Rue!

Thanks - I seem to remember she was married to another guy on the show because her last name was Cavender (she and her hubby went on vacation with Maude and Walter - then dropped a bombshell that they were splitting up).

I just found out the depressing, heartbreaking news about Rue's passing. I can not believe that she's gone, not to sound mean or harsh, but I thought Betty was the next to go, not Rue. Now I'm severely depressed and in tears, this is breaking my heart, we keep losing GG left and right. My thoughts and prayers go out to Rue's family and friends'. On June 3, Rue McClanahan died after Mark Bish, her son from her first marriage, decided to take her off life support. Morrow Wilson, who McClanahan separated from in 2009 after 12 years of marriage, tells Life & Style "In truth, there really was no choice."

Morrow says that McClanahan's health woes began in November after a precautionary stress test revealed she would need bypass surgery. McClanahan was supposed to be presented with a lifetime achievement award at the "Golden: A Gala Tribute to Rue McClanahan" event in November, but her appearance was postponed for her surgery.

While recovering, she suffered a stroke. "The people in her life now say it was minor, but that stroke was massive," Morrow says. "But she got out of the hospital and went home. She was having around-the-clock nursing care, with speech therapy and occupational therapy. We all thought she was on the road to a full recovery."

On Monday June 2, McClanahan suffered a massive brain aneurysm in her New York apartment and was rushed to New York Presbyterian.

"She had a living will saying if she were brain dead, they should pull the plug, but the hospital waited for her son Mark to fly in and make the final decision," Morrow says. He also notes that Rue did not want a funeral service.

McClanahan's longtime friend, Betty White, is enjoying a career resurgence thanks to Facebook and a Snickers ad campaign, but she still made time to keep up with Rue. Morrow says Betty spoke to Rue "every three or four weeks and has said how Rue's speech had come back."

Golden Girls star Rue McClanahan died of a stroke Thursday after being taken off life support by her only surviving son, Mark Bish.
Bish, a 52-year-old actor, was the son of McClanahan from her first marriage. Morrow Wilson, her husband of 12 years, spoke out to the press about Mark Bish's decision to take Rue off life support.
"In truth, there really was no choice," Morrow told Life&Style magazine. "She had a living will saying if she were brain dead, they should pull the plug," he said aiding Mark's decision, while adding there was a catch in her will. Mark had to be the one to make the decision.
"The hospital waited for her son Mark to fly in and make the final decision," Morrow told the mag, noting Rue's request to not have a funeral service in her honor.

As a biography, Mark Bish was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma in 1958 and is 52 years old. He is most-known as actress Rue McClanahan’s son. His father, Tom Bish, was a stage actor in New York City where his parents first met and fell in love. He can be seen in “Intimate Portrait: Rue McClanahan” and has worked as a production assistant for Biosphere 2.

Following an unfortunate massive stoke, Mark Bish’s mother passed way today around 1 am Thursday, June 3rd. According to reports, the actress was taken off life support and left this world peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones; her son, sister, and nephew.

As stated in the Golden Girl’s living will, she included that if “she were brain dead, they should pull the plug”. Ultimately, the final decision was her son Mark’s. So the New York Presbyterian hospital awaited for his arrival so that an absolute agreement could be reached.

It is so sad that Betty White is the only remaining Golden Girl left. It seems like every year for the past 2 years we lose a Golden Girl. Estelle Getty died in 2008, Bea Arthur died in 2009 and now Rue McClanahan dies in 2010. We are losing all these good actors and actresses and it is a real shame. I always liked Rue McClanahan as Blanche on The Golden Girls. I liked all the rest of them on there equally as well. It was a great show, not like the trash that is on TV now a days. I will never forget that one episode where Rose was in the hospital having bypass surgery. Blanche, Sofia, and Dorothy were right there for her when she needed them the most. That is true friendship. With that being said, may Rue rest in peace and she is greatly missed.

Rue's autobiography, My First Five Husbands (and the Ones Who Got Away) is very entertaining, Monika. I'm actually re-reading it now after Rue's passing. She was quite a bit like her character of Blanche in real life...
