I just happened to watch that very episode for the first time last week as I finished the complete series on DVD! (Although now I'm going back and watching the episodes with the commentary on them.)
I'd seen 80 percent of the eps in syndication in the early '70s, but what a blast to go back and watch a lot of the classics, and to also view a few I'd never seen before!
The Dick Van Dyke Show was GREAT, and as for the final episode, what a nice way to tie up all the loose ends, AND to show some clips of the best moments. I'm not sure how much of a fuss was made over the last show, as happens these days, but I have to think most fans were very happy with the final result.

I always thought they could have gotten at least two more seasons out of this.

Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam wanted to do 2 more seasons but Dick, Mary, and Carl all had aspirations to make their mark in the movie business. And they also wanted to quit the series while it was still a hit and not wait til it was a shadow of its former self.

Rose Marie has said that she thinks it could have gone on for another couple of seasons if it was filmed in color.
I read somewher that Carl & Sheldon Lenoard were thinking about doing the final 2 seasons that way.

it was one of the rare shows that had a final episode back then.

it was one of the rare shows that had a final episode back then.
That was probably because they chose to end the show when they did rather than waiting for the network to cancel them.
