ELYRIA, Ohio - A ramp company has stepped forward to help a woman whose wheelchair ramp was stolen.
Cordelia Simpson was shocked when she woke up Thursday morning and wheeled out onto the front porch of her Elyria home.
Between the hours of 12:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Thursday, someone stole the large wheelchair ramp on the front porch of her East Avenue home.
Simpson says the night before, someone tried to break in. Police were called, but no one was found.
She never dreamed they were after her ramp.
"I just couldn't believe they would take a wheelchair (ramp)," said Simpson. "Most people, if you break in, you take TVs, computers or something, but they took a ramp, which is like the main access for us to get in and out of the house."
Simpson, 34, suffers from bone deterioration in both legs and can't get around without a wheelchair or walker.
To add insult to injury, she says whoever took the ramp also kicked her three legged dog, Heather, in the ribs.
"I'm pretty much stuck here in the house," said Simpson. "I can walk a little with my walker, but I can't go and do anything until we get a new ramp put back in," Simpson said on Friday.
John Wright of American Ramp Services in North Olmsted told Fox 8 News he felt obligated to help Simpson. "It bothers me when people take advantage of people with disabilities and seniors, and fortunately, I work for a wonderful company that has the same philosophy that they want to help," said Wright.
On Saturday, Wright delivered a brand new $4,000 steel ramp to Simpson.
She told Fox 8 News Saturday she's incredibly grateful for the donation. "I really appreciate it, they don't understand the difference they're making," Simpson said, "It's ten times better than the one I had."
Elyria Police are still looking for the suspects who took Simpson's old wheelchair ramp.
