by Chris Jordan
posted May 27th 2010

Comic book fans will get a double jolt of Green Lantern's power ring next year when a new animated Green Lantern series debuts in the fall of 2011 on the Cartoon Network, right after the theatrical release of the big-screen version of the superhero, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

According to the report, "Green Lantern: The Animated Series" will complement the upcoming Warner Bros. Green Lantern movie, which stars Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, a test pilot who meets a dying alien and subsequently becomes the Green Lantern.

Blake Lively of "Gossip Girl" will play Reynolds' love interest and Peter Sarsgaard will be baddie Dr. Hector Hammond.

The film is scheduled to open June 17, 2011.

The news of an animated Lantern broke during a Time Warner investment day presentation on Thursday by Phil Kent, chairman and CEO of Time Warner's Turner networks. Turner owns the Cartoon Network.

well I am excited - if its as good as Batman the Brave and the Bold I think it will work, although I hope they don't unnecessarily dumb it down quite as much - Justice League and Justice League Unlimited did pretty well with the tone they took in the series.

New York Comic Con: "Green Lantern"

A panel for the upcoming "Green Lantern: The Animated Series" offered an early glimpse at the Cartoon Network series, which is coming late next year following Warner Bros.' live-action film starring Ryan Reynolds.

Character and set designs were revealed, along with a short clip of test footage.

"It's a straight-up science fiction show," said executive producer Bruce Timm, a fan-favorite for his work on the "Batman" and "Superman" animated series from the 1990s.

"Very little of it takes place on Earth."

Instead, Hal Jordan and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps will have their power-ringed hands full taking on the rage-filled Red Lantern Corps in deep space.

The show will feature computer-generated animation, but Timm says the characters will look more like toys than real people: "We don't want to be one of those CGI shows that's trying to trick you into thinking it's live-action."
