AMITYVILLE, N.Y., May 25 (UPI) -- The New York state house that inspired "The Amityville Horror" is back on the market for an asking price of $1.15 million.

The home, where Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed six family members in 1974 and was supposedly haunted when George and Kathleen Lutz lived there for 28 days, was listed Monday in Amityville by Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty, Newsday reported Tuesday.

The events at the home inspired Jay Anson's 1977 book, "The Amityville Horror: A True Story," which in turn became the basis for several film adaptations.

"It's one of the more beautifully redone houses in the neighborhood," listing agent Laura Zambratto said.

Yes, me too.

I read the book back in the 70's and there are images from it that still scare me today. I know that many say the Lutzes made up everything in order to make money, but George Lutz maintained to his grave that at least most of the story was true.

Plus who leaves a house in the middle of the night after only living there 28 days? And at a great price, no less?? Something was going on in that house!

In real life, the Lutz family found the house from "an ad in the paper".

It was a year after the mass murder and they bought the house for the beautiful location and the really low price.

Mr. Lutz mentioned the reason he bought the house was that he needed a place for his family and they've already tried looking at dozens of houses and couldn't find anything suitable.

Unfortunately, the house has been remodeled. The famous "eye shaped" windows have been replaced, so it doesn't have that creepy look to it anymore.

I read that it was a hoax Lutz was deeply in debt and made it up, a family was murdered there but no hauntings took place. He wanted to cash in on the legend.

Same here. Plus the story about the hoax popped up on one of those TV documentaries about haunted locations.

Does the Amityville House Have a New Tenant?

If you've ever wanted to see the inside of the famous house that inspired The Amityville Horror, you could soon get that chance.

The house went on the market recently, and one group has already stepped forward and expressed an interest in leasing it.

Newsday is reporting that PETA wants to stage an exhibition about "the real-life horrors inflicted on animals at factory farms and slaughterhouses," titled "The Amityville Slaughterhouse of Horrors."

The vice president of the animal rights group, Tracy Reiman, has told the owner that "Not only would hosting PETA's exhibit attract more potential buyers to the house, it would also let visitors know that every vegan saves more than 100 animals a year."

"The show," Newsday says, "would feature instruments used in raising and killing animals for meat, milk and eggs, including wire battery cages, branding irons and electrified prods. Attendees would have the chance to be put inside a metal-and-concrete pig gestation crate..."

But the part that freaks out even a seasoned horror fan like myself is this: "Each child would be given a 'crazed and knife-wielding Ronald McDonald doll.'" Yikes!

They should demolish that house already.
The Sylivia Likens murder home was finally demolished.

I doubt the Amittyville house would ever be demolished. From what I have read the owners after the Lutz' never experienced anything weird the only issues they had was with people driving by and taking pictures of the house. I think with the Sylvia Likens house it was the kind of house that was never in extremely good condition.

REALLY??? lol, do you think they'll allow anyone to just walk in and look around? I have always wanted to go to that house. Hoax or not, I want to see the place that inspired The Amityville Horror.

No way. It's not a tourist spot, people actually live there.

(it remains to be seen what will becomes of the place with the new owners but it never was a tourist spot)

Exactly, that's why one of the previous owners remodeled the house a bit, getting rid of the "eye shaped" windows. They wanted to deter tourists and keep their privacy.

People living in a house doesn't stop a famous house from being a tourist spot- The Walsh's house, aka The Goonies House from "The Goonies" is occupied but it's still the number one tourist spot in Oregon. Granted, the house is now only open to visitors during special occasions like the upcoming 25th Anniversary of the movie. But a few years ago you could tour the house with permission from the owners.

I just meant while its up for sale. LOL, I could never just walk in while someone was living there. I ask because I know when we sold our house and when my grandma sold her house the realtors held an open house where you could just walk in and take a look at the place.

Then the best thing to do, if you're serious about it, is to contact the Amityville realtor and ask them about open house / buying information.

Then the new owners should be wise to make it some sort of exhibit, if even a limited one. $$$
