View Full Version : When Shelley Fabares left "The Donna Reed Show"
Rezny@gmail.com 05-16-2010, 11:16 PM Did she meet with any animosity (ill-feelings)from the rest of the cast-the late Donna Reed, the late Carl Betz ,or Paul Petersen.,or producer Tony Owen? And how about when she returned? And did she get along with Paul's sister,Patty?
MickeyMac 05-17-2010, 02:20 PM Could you try some spacing and punctuation between words and sentences please. Your posts are hard to read.
Rezny@gmail.com 05-17-2010, 06:55 PM Sure. Repeating the question: Did she meet with any animosity (ill- feeling)from the rest of the cast? The late Donna Reed, the late Carl Betz or Paul Petersen? Or Producer Tony Owen? And how about when she returned? Was she welcomed back with open arms then? And did she get along with Paul Petersen's sister,Patty?Hope this is better

As far as I know there were no bad feelings on either side after Fabares departed. Over the years in interviews she, nor Donna Reed, or Paul Petersen never said anything negative about each other or the show. My guess is everyone respected Shelley's decision to leave.
ThomasE 05-22-2010, 07:54 PM That's good to hear. As a kid, I always wondered why NAN skipped seasons 6 and 7? I would have liked to have seen Shelly's appearaces on the show. I'm glad she had a positive experience on the show. However, don't you hate when a character leaves a show to "try new things"? LOL.

NAN=Nick at Nite right??
From what I recall I dont remember them skipping seasons 6 and 7. When I was watching they showed the entire series, but that was at least 20 years ago.
old grouch 05-23-2010, 11:14 PM Nick at Nite skipped the elusive season 4.
bliss 07-12-2010, 11:18 PM I just couldn't get into the reruns of the Donna Reed Show after Shelley left the series as a regular. Like Desi Jr leaving Here's Lucy halfway through its run...the Donna Reed Show just didn't sit well with me without my fave character Mary Stone making regular appearances.
catlover79 07-15-2010, 02:03 AM I'm a big Shelley fan (I grew up watching her on Coach). I've never seen the later years of TDRS but I can't imagine the show without Shelley/Mary.
Which season does Shelley sing "Johnny Angel" on the show? Is that Season 4 or 5?

The episode in which Shelley sang "Johnny Angel" was called "Donna's Prima Donna". It aired on February 1, 1962 making it episode 20 of season 4.

Cool - thanks!! Yet ANOTHER reason to get Season 4 released!!

Definitely!
catlover79 07-15-2010, 03:20 AM Now that I think of it, does anyone else suspect that S4 may be held up due to music licensing rights because of this episode?

You may be on to something there. I think that has to be considered as a possibility.

Yeah, I just thought about that - that they might not be able to clear the rights to use the song. If that's the case, what a shame. :(
bliss 06-11-2011, 08:34 PM I always believe that Mary was the favorite child of Alex and Donna.
Re-watching the dvds from the beginning and she is mother's little helper and daddy's girl.
mstewart 06-16-2011, 01:15 PM I had a huge crush on Shelley then.

She was a mini-Donna!!!
old grouch 06-17-2011, 10:34 AM I don't know if Mary was Donna and Alex's favorite, but Jeff seemed to be in the doghouse a lot more.

Well, he did deserve it.
comedyfreak 08-11-2011, 09:29 AM After the series ended, did they ever do a reunion show?

I think they did.
The cast remained tight after the show ended. They always managed to get together for lunch dates.
bliss 12-25-2012, 12:15 AM How many guest appearances did Shelley do after she left the show at the end of the 5th season? She seemed very close to her TV family and the crew.

A made-for-TV movie, like they did with 'Father Knows Best'? No, they never did. I believe they were considering it, but after Carl Betz passed away, they decided not to do it without him.
Last year (just prior to the release of season 4 DVD) Shelley, Paul, Patti and other people associated with the show reunited at the Paley Center at an event open to the general public:

According to IMDb she did 6 more episodes:
- 3 in season 6 (#6.08, #6.11, #6.14);
- 2 in season 7 (#7.05, #7.15) and
- 1 in season 8 (#8.13)

Mary Owen did disclose on my Facebook page for The Donna Reed Show that her mother was indeed considering reviving the series, but as a drama, around 1977, but then Carl Betz passed away and she immediately put the kibosh on doing it.

I love and use IMDB alot, but am pretty sure IMDB is incorrect about Shelley being in any final season episodes. I found this list on another webpage and believe it to be accurate. I have What Are Friends For, Old Faithful and Indoor Outing and she is in all of those episodes.
S 6: Ep 8 Mary Comes Home

S 6: Ep 11 What Are Friends For?

Oh not bad at all for Shelley appearances. Glad she appeared in the last 3 seasons briefly. I do notice that her appearances diminishes as the seasons go by. I wished she did the final episode at least

Confusing
I assumed she was in the final season from another poster.
With the 6th -8th season episodes not being seen in decades I understand the confusion of Shelley appearances.

Yes, I see now that "Indoor Outing" (#7.30) is also listed on IMDb, but I didn't initially see it because it is in a different section - archive footage. Apparently, she didn't film any new scenes for that episode, they just used previously made footage. But I don't have that episode, so I can't confirm if they got that right. Maybe she does have new scenes in it.
As for "Anyone Can Drive" (#7.10), IMDb did omit it. I saw now a synopsis for the episode on TV.com and Mary is mentioned in it.
Finally, I checked synopsis for episode #8.13 and Mary is not mentioned in it, so I assume IMDb got that wrong and you're right about Shelley not being in any final season episodes.
So, Shelley appeared in three season 6 episodes and four season 7 episodes, for a total of 7 post-exit episodes.

I have not watched "Indoor Outing" for a quite a while, but I think you are correct about no new scenes.
I wish I had all the episodes with Shelley. The show was not the same after she left. However, I still enjoyed it and very much remember the "Trish" episodes and my schoolgirl crush on Paul Peterson :D
