View Full Version : George A. Romero Has 2 More "Dead" Films Planned...Does He Have ANY Other Ideas?
Brian Damage 05-12-2010, 10:12 PM Shock Till You Drop just wrapped a candid interview with the always amiable George A. Romero in Los Angeles, where he's hitting the press circuit for Survival of the Dead.
Our full interview is to come, however, I thought I'd share that Romero told us he has ideas for at least two more Dead projects that he would love to shoot back-to-back, schedule permitting. Should Survival do well enough, he says returning for two more entries would feel like home to him and bringing his family back together.
The next two films, should they happen, would continue to push the news ideas he's applied to the undead in Survival. So, it sounds like the first four films create one arc and what began in Diary would create a whole different arc.

HuntingtonM15 05-12-2010, 10:20 PM Zombie movies have become so tired to me. It's probably my least favorite type of horror movie.
Retro4Life 05-12-2010, 10:30 PM ^ While there have been a number of good ones (mostly Romero's and the Evil Dead series), I have to agree. I don't understand the fascination; unlike the classic monsters, zombies are just machines really. There's no character dimension to them at all. You can't even hate them really. They are just victims of something, be it a plague or radiation or voodoo or whatever.
Torgo 05-13-2010, 11:04 AM I enjoyed Diary, but Survival of the Dead was disappointing.
I still enjoy my zombie films, though I prefer the ones from the 30's through 40's, and 70's through 80's...besides Romero there were other zombie classics- Jean Rollin's Grapes of Death(and I enjoyed Rollin's The Living Dead Girl), Return of the Living Dead, Dead and Buried(penned by Alien creators Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett), Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, Peter Jackson's Braindead, Cemetery Man, Fulci's Zombi and the B&W classics- I Walked With A Zombie, and Isle of the Dead. And I'm a huge fan of cheesy zombie movies like Redneck Zombies, and The Video Dead.
Newer zombie films are hit or miss, but I still watch them. Of the last few years I've enjoyed- Zombie Honeymoon, Zombieland, Dawn of the Dead '04, Dance of the Dead '05, Pontypool, Shaun of the Dead, Dead & Breakfast, Fido, Forest of the Dead, and Trailer Park of Terror.
I'm always interested in the adaptation of Max Brook's World War Z.
Personally I'll take a zombie film over another tired installment of Saw, or Final Destination, or sparkly vampire emo flicks.
JamesG 05-13-2010, 11:12 AM I enjoyed Diary, but Survival of the Dead was disappointing.
Of Romero's recent films I enjoyed Land of the Dead and the remake of The Crazies (which he produced but didn't direct).
I did not like Diary of the Dead. I found it slow and the movie seemed to lack zombies, there was hardly any zombie action here.
A couple of things I did enjoy were the deaf Amish guy and the scene near the end of one of the friends going crazy in his mansion.
I didn't see Survival yet so I can't say about that one.

Retro4Life 05-13-2010, 03:40 PM What did you guys think of "Zombieland"?
I liked it in general, due to the characters and the original tone it set up. I thought the very long and out of place Bill Murray segment in the middle almost sunk it, but overall it was quite good.
And has anyone seen a 1972 flick called "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things"? I liked it a lot; obviously inspired by "Night of the Living Dead" but still original and with some really creepy and memorable scenes.

I love Zombieland, the Bill Murray segment was my favorite.
Big fan of Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things- try to watch it every October. Before he passed Bob Clark(who did the original)had planned on remaking it.
And Bob Clark's Deathdream is an excellent little undead film.

For me, I loved it seeing at the theater. I found it to be very funny, the crowd was very active, and over-all it was a great experience.
When I bought it on Blu-ray and watched it alone I didn't find it nearly as enjoyable. I actually found it dull and not really very funny.
So to me Zombieland was a movie to be enjoyed at the theater.

I saw a midnight showing of it on Halloween. The crowd was pretty into it here, too.
JamesG 05-14-2010, 09:57 AM I liked the new Crazies too, and I did enjoy Land.
So then I have to ask, what did you like about Diary of the Dead?
I've also talked to others about Survival and they say that if you thought Diary was disappointing you will be REALLY unhappy with Survival.

The movie entertained me- I enjoyed the characters and the story....it's hard for me to put specifics on why I like or hate films :)
Just like Land, Diary is one of those hate or like Romero films- but I haven't heard from any(yet) who like Survival, though I don't think it was as bad as Romero's earlier film Bruiser .

I see what you're saying... I still didn't find anything entertaining about Diary.
Yeah, I haven't heard anything positive about Survival. I still would like to see it though, but I know not to be expecting greatness.

We can't all like the same stuff.:D

Oh I know that for a fact, believe me. ;)
Torgo 05-14-2010, 12:54 PM How could I forget! I really enjoyed Død snø(Dead Snow)- excellent nazi zombie flick!
And I'm eagerly awaiting the upcoming The 4th Reich
Speaking of nazi zombies, Shock Waves is another of my faves- plus you have Peter Cushing!

It's interesting finding out what people like and don't like. I'll see a horror film and really like it, show it to a friend who I think would enjoy it too. And they don't...yet a friend I wouldn't think would like it does.
I guess one of the great things about the horror genre is there's so many different types of horror, and subgenres.

There was word last year that Peter Jackson (Dead Alive) was behind some nazi-zombie project called "The Christ Must Die".
The plot was said to be about nazi zombies going back in time to prevent Jesus from being born. There was word it was going to be made on some abandoned Jerusalem set created by a "religious billionaire" in New Zealand for a 'Mel Gibson-like' project that never materialized.
Peter Jackson quickly debunked this story when interviewed at Comic-Con. He didn't seem too pleased to be asked about it.

That was my experience with Session 9, someone recommended it to me saying how great it was and knowing my interest in abandoned buildings telling me I would love it.
Well, I didn't get into it. I know that's another that you like and I don't.

Wow, that would have been interesting.

And Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers was another one I think..not my fault you can't appreciate some of the classics:lol: :D

No, that one I actually like. I haven't seen it in years though.

Then there is hope for you:happyface
Torgo 05-14-2010, 03:01 PM ^ While there have been a number of good ones (mostly Romero's and the Evil Dead series)
I love The Evil Dead films, but I guess I've never considered them zombie films, I put them in the same subgenre of films like Demons '85.
Torgo 05-14-2010, 04:15 PM Another one I love is ReAnimator(curious about the upcoming sequel with William H Macy), and Fulci's The Beyond.
Other cheesy zombie flicks I've enjoyed- Burial Ground, Cemetery of Terror, I Eat Your Skin, I Was A Teenage Zombie, The Dead Next Door, Night Of The Living Dorks, The Child '77, City of the Living Dead, Zombi Holocaust, Zombi 3 '88, Dead Dudes In The House, The Dead Pit, I Zombie, Return of the Living Dead III, Boy Eats Girl, Toxic Zombies, Junk: Shiryô-gari
Some of the worst I've seen- Zombie Lake, House of the Dead, Day of the Dead 2: Contagium, Night Of The Living Dead 3D, Oasis of the Zombies, Zombie 5: Killing Birds, Zombie Rampage, The Dead Hate The Living
I haven't seen it yet, but I've been sort of curious about Deadgirl '08.
And in honor of JamesG, I have to mention- zombie porn:
Le notti erotiche dei morti viventi ('80 aka Erotic Nights of the Living Dead), and Porno Holocaust:D
And the Holy Grail of zombie flicks- Dead End '85, yet to see it, question its existense...but it's supposedly a mockumentary style zombie flick.
Torgo 05-14-2010, 05:35 PM I want to repeat 'Pontypool'- an excellent little film where a zombie-virus spreads through the English language. Great winter setting, and Stephen Mchattie is excellent as a DJ trapped in a radio station.
Dr. Thong 05-14-2010, 05:43 PM The only thing that's "dead" is George Romero's creativity.
Torgo 05-14-2010, 05:56 PM The only thing that's "dead" is George Romero's creativity.
Yeah, I think this is partly due to the fact that Land was his most successful movie since the 80's so now he's afraid to not make an undead film. My opinion anyways.

JamesG 05-18-2010, 05:10 PM I figured to mention it here that Romero's Survival of the Dead was given the DVD/Blu-ray release date of August 24, 2010.
No other details announced as of yet.
JamesG 08-18-2010, 02:11 PM Just like Land, Diary is one of those hate or like Romero films- but I haven't heard from any(yet) who like Survival, though I don't think it was as bad as Romero's earlier film Bruiser .
I finally got around to seeing Survival...
The thing that really made the movie bad were the horrible special effects, but other than that I found the movie enjoyable.
To me it was more entertaining than Diary.
Nighthawk76 08-19-2010, 01:19 PM Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead are classics. Day of the Dead and Land of the Dead are not quite classics but still good. The last two films were not very good.
