The first them with lyrics of the second season with the instrumental.

I prefered the first seasons theme. The instrumental theme actually grated my nerves a bit. Plus I enjoyed the first eps. also.. it wasn't as "fun" when they went to New York. I think they gave up on the show too quickly.. they only made 8 eps. before the NY
season, and I think that's when the show lost some of its audience.. causing the cancellation. Just my Humble opinion.

I like the 1st theme better - it has that 80's feel to it. They made too many changes from season 1 to 2.. does anyone know how they did in the ratings?

I just thought about this show the other day, I had forgotten how much I used to love it. Don't remember too much but I think I liked the second season better in NY (maybe I'm not bias since I am originally from NYC) but would have to see reruns to refresh my memory. I also liked the theme song from season one better. If you listen to the theme music from season # 2, it sounds very similar to the music from the theme song to the sitcom, "My Two Dads".

I liked both theme songs. The first had that super 80's sound and the next was more of a sophisticated hip 80's sound. I loved the synthesiser drum that was used frequently in the 80's in songs.

In a "People" magazine article, NBC aired DT only as a "tryout" series in the spring of '84 in hopes that it would perform well enough to warrant a slot on the fall schedule. The series did not fare well, as it was often in the 50's every week. It was decided the ONLY way the show would return was if it was re-vamped and the cast was changed. The original writers were fired, and the new writers were told to write the girl's parts on a more mature level. The second version was modeled after "Facts of Life", hoping that it would attract more of that show's audience, as it was aired directly after FOL. And there were many similarities: Kate and Allison now lived with their aunt (similar to Mrs. Garrett), two male counterparts (similar to George and Andy). It didn't work because the show was scheduled irregularly, and after FOL, few people tuned in for DT. I loved everything about the first version better than the second, including the music. Remember that Allison was the "studious" and "serious" one when they lived in Iowa and was too concerned about studying, and suddenly she's in DESIGN SCHOOL and auditioning for the Maxi-Burger commercial??

Thanks for posting that information. I liked both seasons. It did seem a little boring some episodes. Overall, I liked the format for season one better. I did like some things about season two:
Arlene
New York City
The theme song
there were some good episodes during both seasons. Liz and Jean were both talented actresses and dancers.

Definitely the first theme song the best. The second theme like BradyBunchGirl said do sound a bit like theme from "My Two Dads", which ironically also repeated on USA a hour later after repeats of DT.
Also contributing to the fact that season two's theme can be grating and nerve wracking sometimes, too.
I didn't know this show aired after FOL during its original NBC run, b/c ironically, both shows had Embassy's infamous "Rolling E" logo at the end.

At least there was an attempt to make these two into stars during that time. Too bad that the show didn't work.

I loved the first theme and agreed that they didn't allow enough time for the first format to work. Watched it on the NBC run and the countless USA reruns.

The second one. More often than not I prefer instrumental theme songs.
