On a scale from 0 to 10 ,rank the series AND the big screen movie.I'd give the series a 7,(the black and white episodes get an 8,the color ones get a 6,),and the big screen movie gets a 1(a good part at THE VERY BEGINNING saves it from a 0.)Feel free to post.

Anyway, I'd give the early episodes an 8, the color ones a 6 (mostly-the exeptions are those stupid womans lib ones which get a 0, and the ones with Mark Temelton which get a 3), and the other black-and-white ones a 7.

The good part AT THE VERY BEGINNING,was when they were driving down the Highway,and were threatened by a gang with knives.When Jed pulled out his shotgun,the gang with the knives sped away in their car,frightened as all get out.From then on,it was downhill all the way .

....as a mixture of corporate greed (on the studio's part), market research... and "fan fiction".

Now, I say this because sometimes, the authors behind the "big screen" version of popular TV series from the '50s through "today", usually didn't watch the actual series when they were kids, or IF they had, they have no idea HOW to properly "replicate" it, or recapture the flavor of the original (as most first-time "fan fiction" authors do).

Take the "all-black" version of "THE HONEYMOONERS", with "Cedric the Entertainer" as 'Ralph Kramden', a few years back. Didn't anyone understand that the ONLY WAY the idea was going to work was if they'd brought back Jackie Gleason from the dead? Because NO ONE ELSE could "be" Ralph but him. Or Art Carney's "Ed Norton". Or the two actresses who were supposed to be "Alice" and "Trixie". Well, we all know how successful the "new and improved version" of the idea was to Paramount/Viacom, who owns the original series. They also believed they could reach a younger, "hipper" audience by filming it the way they did....and they didn't, alienating both kinds of audiences that were supposed to part with their hard-earned money to see it.

The same with "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES". It was as successful as the attempted "big screen" versions of "THE HONEYMOONERS", "LEAVE IT TO BEAVER", "SGT. BILKO", "McHALE'S NAVY", "CAR 54, WHERE ARE YOU?" and "BEWITCHED" were. Who remembers them today?

Those that succeeded- "THE BRADY BUNCH", "THE FLINTSTONES" and "THE ADDAMS FAMILY"- did so because the people behind them KNEW what they wanted to do.

The only real genius in casting for "The Beverly Hillbillies" movie was Lily Tomlin as Miss Jane but she wound up over-mugging for the camera. I don't know where she came up with that one stupid face she made three or four times, but it was really silly. And Cloris Leachman as Granny was so uninspired. The whole movie was a Clambake.

I disagree, she was also miscast. Jim Varney made a pretty decent Jed, though. (but not as good as Buddy Ebsen).
And the girl that played Elly was OK, not good but not bad either.

yea, the last one was good even though it had a few mistakes. The best movies were 2, 4, and 6 of the original crew, and FIRST CONTACT with the next generation crew. And I also think THE MOTION PICTURE was underrated.

OF COURSE he wasn't as good as Buddy Ebsen. Nobody could compare to any of the original Hillbillies, Buddy, Irene Ryan, Donna Douglas, Max Baer or Bea Benaderet! But Varney still did a good job, and Cloris Leachman was great!

I liked the movie, it was fun in a nostalgic way. But you can't even compare it to the original series. It was 10 times better than the Bewitched movie.

when I rented it from Netflix, and started watching it; I realized after 10 minutes how bad it was but decided to keep it on until they showed Buddy Ebsens cameo as Barnaby Jones (for those who don't know, that was a detective he played in a series after "BH") but it was so bad I couldn't even make it that far; and was forced to turn it off after another 10 minutes!!!
