For those of us who grew up in the 1990s, one thing was certain, we would never be considered "too old" to watch cartoons. As both cable and network stations began adding more and more teen and adult-friendly animated programs, we stayed glued to the sets, whether we were trying to figure out what was going on in Aeon Flux, mimicking Butt-head with a "huh, huh, huh" or falling out of our seats with laughter during The Ren and Stimpy Show.

Below are six '90s cartoons that made an impact. We limited the list to series that were aired on U.S. television during the decade and attracted older audiences.

I liked "The Simpsons" between Seasons 1-13 because at that time, they were the only Prime Time Adult Cartoon that was mainstay.

There were others between 1990 and 1993 that tried to duplicate it ("Capitol Critters", "Fish Police", and "Family Dog") but it wasn't until "Beavis and Butt-Head" and "Ren and Stimpy" that "The Simpsons" had some competition.

Today, "The Simpsons" have competition with Seth McFarlane.

Never understood the appeal of Ren & Stimpy.

The original Aeon Flux cartoons that aired on liquid television were pretty cool, but the series made little sense at all.

all those cartoons that were mentioned are all adult-orientated, as opposed to being kiddie based.

tbh my favourite 90s cartoons were johnny bravo, cow and chicken, pirates of dark water, x-men, recess, goof troop to name- all of which were on cartoon network, fox, disney channel. before those channels jumped the shark.
