View Full Version : 1986's NBC-TV movie "Return to Mayberry"
Rezny@gmail.com 05-06-2010, 09:39 PM Does anyone remember this movie Andy Griffith did before doing "Matlock"?It was great seeing an older Sheriff Andy Taylor,Helen(in the film she mellowed considerably and was likable),Opie,Barney Fife,Howard Sprague, the Darlings,Goober,Gomer,Charlene,Briscoe and all the rest of the Darlings, and of course,Ernest T.Bass again. It captured the flavor of "The Andy Griffith Show",and, ironically, one of the executive producers was Fred Silverman(yes, the SAME Fred Silverman who was responsible for CBS dumping all its rural-based shows in 1971).What did the rest of you think of this movie, when was the last time you saw it,and wouldn't it be nice to see it again?
Rezny@gmail.com 05-06-2010, 09:49 PM And an older Thelma Lou was there. And,in case you're wondering what happened to Thelma Lou and Barney,it was very good news.
Lennon 05-07-2010, 01:44 AM Being a big AGS fan of course I saw It and would love to see it again soon. It's been years.
treky 05-07-2010, 02:01 AM I'd also love to see it again, but it never gets shown anywhere:(
which is a shame because it was really good, like one of the others said it really capurted the flavor of "TAGS". I remember reading somewhere after it aired, that they wanted to make a sequel to it for Christmas but they couldn't get everyone together again, also Andy Griffith was just starting "MATLOCK".
I recorded it on VHS when it first aired (on NBC) but I don't know what happened to the tape.
I remember when it aired a local station was showing reruns of "TAGS".
I wonder if it's on DVD.

tv star collector 05-07-2010, 08:12 AM I still have it on VHS. Very entertaining and great fun to see the whole cast
(except Frances Bavier, who did record a voiceover). I can't recall any other
TV series reunion that managed to bring together that many members of the
original cast.
TV_on_the_Porch 05-09-2010, 05:31 PM (except Frances Bavier, who did record a voiceover).
False. I can't believe it's still being asserted on net forums that the voice is hers. It sounds nothing like her and there was a great deal of publicity about the telecast both before and shortly after, almost all accounts making mention of the fact that she did NOT participate.
comedyfreak 05-10-2010, 01:05 PM I seen it originally and I bought a copy online from iOffer.com or ebay can't remember. It was the best reunion movie imo. @tv star collector I read somewhere that Frances Bavier was not involved with the reunion for some reason. People thought she died in real life and she hadn't at this point. They didn't even ask her to be apart of the movie.
tv star collector 05-10-2010, 07:00 PM According to the Dec. 12, 1989 issue of Globe:
"Frances Bavier ... was heartbroken when she went into that hospital," says
her neighbor and longtime friend Allan Resch. "I don't think she and Andy Griffith got along. That's the reason she didn't do the reunion show four years
ago. Other members of the cast tried to talk to her. Ron Howard .. once
dropped by Frances' house here in Silver City. But she only opened the door a crack and spoke to him for a couple of minutes before slamming it shut.
She was bitter, that's for sure. Frances was obviously a woman who had been
deeply hurt. She was heartbreakingly lonely."
The ailing 86-year-old actress was rushed to the hospital on November 22.
But she jealously guarded her privacy as she'd done since The Andy Griffith
Show went off the air in 1968.
Neighbors who live close to the actress' house paint a picture of a lonely,
devastated woman who clung to her seven cats for company.
"She is a real nice person," recalls Gladys Farmer. "But Frances Bavier wanted
to be left alone. And we all respected that wish."
An Associated Press article later reported:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- On her deathbed, actress Frances Bavier of The
Andy Griffith Show was just like her TV character Aunt Bee: softhearted.
In an interview to be broadcast on The Nashville Network, Griffith told about a
telephone conversation he had with Bavier shortly before she died of cancer
and heart disease in 1990 at age 86.
"She said, 'I'm sorry we didn't get along better,'" Griffith said.
"She said, 'It was my fault.' And she said, 'I just wish we had and you ran the
show and you made the show a success and I'm just sorry we didn't get along
better.'"
"We got along fine," Griffith said. "It's just that she didn't feel like it a lot of
times."
The actor who went on to star in Matlock said Bavier's final wish to mend fences was heartwarming.
"She wanted to talk to me to say goodbye," he said. "That's some experience."
The Apr. 12, 1986 TV Guide explained Frances Bavier's absence from the movie: "There has
been one death in the family. Aunt Bee has passed on to sitcom heaven, perhaps because the
actress who portrayed her, Frances Bavier, has retired from acting."
Zoneboy 05-10-2010, 08:42 PM A couple of minor mistakes, Frances Bavier lived in Siler City, NC not Silver City and she died in 1989 not 1990.
treky 05-11-2010, 01:32 AM I remember seeing an interview once with Howard Morris (Ernest T. Bass, and he also directed some episodes of "TAGS" and at least one episode of "GOMER PYLE: U.S.M.C.") and he was saying that, to be fair, she was difficalt to get along with sometimes. He recalled a scene in one episode he directed once, where he just asked her to hurry up; without sounding mean or anything-then he raised his voice as he said this part-"SHE JUST GLARED AT ME; AND SAID 'DON'T YOU EVER TALK TO ME LIKE THAT AGAIN' ! "
comedyfreak 05-12-2010, 05:38 AM How sad, she could've done it if she had wanted. At least she made peace with Andy.
