Craig Kilborn to Return With a New Syndicated Show
By BILL CARTER
May 5, 2010

Craig Kilborn, the original host of “The Daily Show” and then a late-night host for CBS in its 12:35 a.m. “Late Late Show” is about to return to television in a prospective syndicated show for 20 TV, the syndication arm of Fox’s television stations.

The show in development would not be a late-night show, according to executives who are aware of the proposed deal. But a memo sent by the show’s producer seeking staff members described it as a combination of a talk show with a “non-political ‘Daily Show.’”

The show is likely to get a trial run on Fox stations this summer.

Those stations were just in the middle of a proposed deal that would have brought Conan O’Brien to the Fox network. The stations have purchased expensive syndicated programs for the late-night time periods and were apparently not eager to have the network add Mr. O’Brien.

But a show with Mr. Kilborn will not be on the Fox network. It would instead run on the group of local stations owned by Fox. And the executives aware of the deal emphasized it is not intended to be a late-night show. It could potentially be a daytime entry, along the lines of similar syndicated entertainment shows like the one hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.

Mr. Kilborn left CBS in 2004, though he had an offer to continue the late-night show for that network. He was eventually replaced by Craig Ferguson.

...I was thinking about Craig Kilborn today. I heard "Play that Funky Music" over a restaurant loudspeaker, and remembered how he used to make his entrance on "THE LATE LATE SHOW" over the opening strains of that song. And here, I honestly thought he'd "retired" from the business since he left CBS in 2004....

Apparently, Fox (or rather, their syndicated distribution arm) is going to launch his series the way they 'test-marketed' "THE WENDY WILLIAMS SHOW" last summer. She became such a success in New York, Los Angeles and two other key cities, she returned nationally in the fall, eventually appearing on both of Rupert Murdoch's N.Y. TV outlets, WNYW and WWOR (the latter replacing the hour-long edition of Channel 9's "NEWS AT TEN" with her, which moved up and became a half-hour at 11pm). Perhaps the Fox stations might eventually schedule him, "in tandem", with Wendy as part of a two-hour "daytime" block. I think Craig's going to try to resurrect his version of "THE LATE LATE SHOW"...but do we reallly need his "snarky" attitude again?

It sounds like a similar format to Chelsea Lately.

...if Kilborn generates enough good ratings this summer, expect to see him back on later this coming season.
