when an actor directs a movie that he or she also has a role in (Leanord Nimoy in "STAR TREK 4: THE VOYAGE HOME" for example) what do they do about the scenes that they're in? Do they have an assistant director to direct the scene?

And do they yell at themselves when they mess up a line?

I know a lot of them will have the scene recorded, then view the playback to see what changes they need to make to their own performance. I believe Kenneth Branagh uses that method.

Jerry Lewis developed the video assist in 1966 so he could view his own performance while directing(which is still used today). He was made an Honorary Member of the Society of Operating Cameramen for this.
