An elderly actress from The Andy Griffith Show who moved to North Carolina's real-life model for Mayberry to escape crime in Los Angeles had her wallet stolen in a daylight mugging last weekend, The Mount Airy News reports.
Betty Lou Lynn, 83, played the character Thelma Lou, the girlfriend of Deputy Barney Fife, in the long-running series.
Lynn, who was born in Kansas and lived for decades in Los Angeles, moved in 2007 to Mount Airy, the birthplace of Andy Griffith and the inspiration for the fictional Mayberry.
A police report says a man grabbed Lynn's wallet containing $130 from her hands at a shopping center Sunday afternoon, the newspaper reports.
The alleged culprit was caught not long after under a bridge, the report says, and at least $43 was recovered.
In 2008, Lynn told the News that she decided to move to Mount Airy after being robbed three times in L.A.
The last straw, she said, came after the second break-in of her home while she was visiting Mount Airy for the annual Mayberry Days celebration. This year's festivities, which happen in late September, mark the 50th anniversary of the TV show.
