Was the pilot for "Get Smart",which was the first episode,shot in Black and White and not color like all of the rest of the shows were?

I don't know, I've often wondered the same thing.

In those days, it was common practice to shoot a pilot in black and white due mainly to the fact that it was cheaper. They did the same thing with Hogan's Heroes.

There would also be noticeable differences in the show's format & characters (names of characters and different actors playing them or even the elimination of a character.)

Usually some time has passed between when the pilot is shot and the show goes into production. This gives the show's, creator, producers and writers the chance to make changes they feel are necessary.

Plus Get Smart was commissioned very late in the pilot season, it was literally the last one produced for consideration in NBC's fall lineup. And this was 1965-66, the transitional year from black and white to color in prime time. It was still very much the norm to shoot pilots in black and white...but what a difference a year makes!
