Even the title of the song is depressing  "Suicide Is Painless" Anybody else think this song is a downer?

I personally think it's a pretty song - downbeat, of course, but still fitting.

Well, M*A*S*H aint exactly an upbeat show, y'know!!! It wouldn't do to have a light, breezy uptempo song, now would it...?

I saw the show first, so when I saw the movie, seeing other actors in the roles seemed weird.

And I didn't realize up to that point that "Suicide Is Painless" had lyrics!!

I prefer the instrumental version on the show myself...as I do the show.;)

OH Nuts!

I prefer the instrumental version too and I don't find this version depressing or uplifting - just right smack in the middle of the two extremes>

I think the lyrics are poignant, it's sad, yet fitting for a wartime drama, which is basically what M*A*S*H was, with some comedy thrown in of course.

Monica, here are the lyrics: http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/televisiontvthemelyrics-50s60s70s/mash.htm

And a video where you can here the song with the lyrics, it's the scene from the M*A*S*H movie: BVUXPjFWfX4

I don't find the music depressing (though it is a little sombre) but the lyrics are certainly depressing.

instrumental please!!!! I like the theme song. It's fitting for a show based on war...There were so many things going on in mash that i felt it was unrealistic a great deal but it had to be i guess to reel in the audience. I actually liked this show and watched it regularly.

NO ! I like sad songs and I like a good tearjerker . "Suicide Is Painless" hits the right formula with me, and many episodes of "M*A*S*H" are tearjerkers .
