I like everyone, but if I had to pick a favorite, I'd pick Ted.

SueAnn Nivens-The Happy Homemaker was always funny in episodes. She was always one of my favorite characters with her jabs at Murray's bald head or man-prowling after Lou.

I'd have to say Lou, Mary, Rhoda, and Phyllis

My favorites without a doubt are 1. Mary 2. Rhoda 3. Lou - in that order. These characters were never over-the-top characters like the other ones on the show. Except for Murray he was just there! But then again he was suposed be kinda' unhappy with his life anyway.

Hmmm...choosing a favourite character is like trying to pick a favourite child or parent, it's near to impossible (for me anyway).

Rhoda for sure (there is something about her friendship with Mary that's always struck me, like the friend every girl wishes she had), Phyllis, Lou, and of course Mary. I love them all too!!!

The great thing about this show (like all good ensemble shows) is that every character/actor was terrific. They complemented each other so well and were so distinctive from one another. So when I make my list--it doesn't mean that I think Murray is better than Ted or visa/versa it simply means that I identify with a certain character on a personal level more. So here goes:

1. Rhoda--she is the type of person I really enjoy hanging out with. Funny without being mean, great personality, wholesome yet worldly, doesn't take herself too seriously and can deflate blowhards--and truth be told, I always (even when she was heavier) found her more attractive than (sorry to say) Mary.

2. Murray--The kind of supportive friend that I would enjoy working with. Able to get the job done--but still able to keep things on an enjoyable plane in the work place--also great at one-liners.

3. Mary--she is my big sister. Someone I know I can always turn to and get good advice. She is always achieveing and always popular but you don't begrudge her for it becuz she is so nice. She is not stuck up like some other "cheerleader" types--who date the captain of the football team--but is friendly and outgoing to everyone.

4. Lou Grant--he is my dad--gruff and loud, but a pussycat inside.
He makes you feel secure.

5. Bess--the girl I would have wanted to date in High School!! but her mother...hmm.

I think its from the Pete Peterson ep. where he's talking to Ted in the newsroom and murray says that line, I think it was on TV Land the other day, I think thats it.

Mine are Mary and Rhoda because I can relate to them as a single girl. My best guy friend's fave is Lou, with Ted a distant second.

Mary and Rhoda and Phyllis loved the interaction between them, really liked Lou too,Ted was annoying at the start,hilarious particularly from season 4 onwards,Sue-Ann for all her catiness,one of the lonliest of the group,good ole Murray and "spacecadet" Georgette.

Im in the "The cast was so great as a unit, that i cant really pick one" camp, but, if I HAD to pick one, Sue-anne Nivens, the gal who taught Martha Stewart how to be a homemaker-b****h :lol:

^ Sue Ann WAS the Martha Stewart of the 1970s and was a character way ahead of her time. Betty White was so great playing this vindictive maneater not to mention the eternal dimbulb Rose on GG.

Mary and Lou are my favorites. Also that damn rhoda!

It's interesting that views are so varied - suggests a very good cast of characters, doesn't it.

For me though, it has to be Sue Anne - every scene she was in was hilarious

Not sure if this is good MTMS message board etiquette, responding to a thread from a while ago, but I wanted to put my two cents in on the characters! (And, yes, I also believe they ALL were great, but I had to order them):

1) Mary; 2) Lou; 3) Murray; 4) Ted; 5) Rhoda; 6) Phyllis; 7) Sue Ann; 8) Gordy; 9) Georgette

Explainer: I'm a journalist, so the office scenes were always extremely funny to me. But that being said, the "girls" were great, too. Mary, obviously, was the center of both worlds, so she gets No. 1, and she was just so attractive.
So it's office types at the front, the girls in the middle...but I agree the cast had to be tremendous to push Ted to fourth and Sue Ann to seventh! They were both hilarious. What a fantastic show!

I love Murray! He's so innocent. The one or two episodes they have about him a season are always my favourite.

Rhoda is a very close second.
