Was Capt. Miller in charge of just the detectives at the police station or the whole precinct? It seemed he never had to deal much with uniformed officers which incompass most of a precinct. No watch-commanders, scheduling etc. I know now in NY, most precincts are run by Deputy Inspectors and only smaller police sub-stations are overseen by captains. I know this is really irrelevant but I wonder these things.

Welcome to the boards!! I think Barney was just in charge of the detectives - if you remember those overeager women cops in S2's episode "Hot Dogs", he asked the ladies who their supervisor was (they worked downstairs). I don't know who Levitt's boss was, however, since he was still a uniformed officer (until the final episode).

Didn't Barney often call or refer to a "Sgt. Cogan?" I always figurered he was the Watch Commander in charge of the uniformed Officers.

You're right, Cogan was in charge of the uniformed cops on the first floor.
