...about music rights on shows on DVD. If they have such a hard time getting them most of the time, how come we never heard about problems getting them when shows were on VHS? And how come studios don't have a problem when they make the shows?
I know they did with "WKRP IN CINCINATTI"; that's why they taped the show instead of filming it.
And something else: why can certain DVDs of shows (for example-"THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES") show the sponsor at the beginning and end, but most can't? For instance on season 1 of "F TROOP" after they show the title they have the words BROUGHT TO YOU BY but then-nothing.

Well for one, most shows were never released on VHS. There may be a handful of episode compliations here and there but very few had complete seasons or eintire series released on VHS. In one case Paramount even replaced music on a VHS release. I have an old VHS copy of "The City On The Edge Of Forever" and the "Goodnight Sweetheart" song is replaced. It is on the DVD set however.
There are different costs associated with clearing music for the airing of a show. It is a lot less expensive than clearing for "attaching" to a DVD release. Even some recently aired shows like "My Name Is Earl" have some songs cleared for airing but because it is so expensive, do not make it onto the DVD set.
The sponsors promos are cleared on advance of release. If the sponsor spot wasn't cleared with the company beforehand it won't appear on the DVD.
