I've heard that too, but according to some census records that some people I know on Lucytalk.com have read, it seems that Vivian Vance was born in 1909, not 1912 like everyone thinks. Wonder why this is???

Vivian was indeed born in 1909. On a reunion visit to Cherryvale, Kansas (her birthplace) - being who she was - obtained her birth certificate from the Cherryvale hall of records and she destroyed it.

On the topic of Ethel, I heard that she had to gain 20 pounds for the part and deeply resented being paired up with William Frawley, whom she considered too old to play her husband. Has anyone else seen this anywhere?

That's true. She'd go away for summer vacation and lose weight, then come back and have to gain it all over again. And she seriously hated WF.

I have ran across that "fact" so many times. I think it's not true because so many Lucy books and preferences say she born in 1909.

Vivian Vance (Who played Ethel Mertz) was only one year older than Lucille Ball. Part of her contract was that she had to stay at least twenty pounds overweight so she would look much older than Lucy.

Also, Vivian Vance's real name was Vivian Jones

July 26, 1909 to August 6, 1911 is two years. ;)

Ethel was always my favorite character on the show. When I was a child watching I Love Lucy I used to think that Lucy acted like a little kid, Ricky acted like her father a lot of the time. Ethel was the perfect opposite to Lucy and didn't get half the credit that was her due.
