Did anybody see Carol Burnett being interviewed on Joy Behar's show this week? Perhaps they'll rerun it tomorrow, I don't know. But it was worth seeing, if only for the story Carol relayed about a conversation she had with Lucy years ago when they were out at lunch at the Farmer's Market in L.A. (a really cool place if you've never been); I imagine this is included in Carol's new book. This was during the Carol Burnett Show years, and Lucy was conveying to Carol how fortunate she was to have Joe Hamilton, her then husband and executive producer of The Carol Burnett Show, to take care of all the dirty work for her on her show (such as confronting the writers if they turned in a bad script), so Carol could just focus on her work. Lucy recounted how, back in the I Love Lucy days, she had "the Cuban" to take care of all those unpleasant tasks for her so she could concentrate on her art. But then when she was first doing The Lucy Show, and Desi was no longer around to do handle those things for her, she was suddenly faced with the reality that she was now on her own. One day early on, she got an inferior script and she knew the writers had to be confronted about it, but there was no one else to do it but her. Lucy told Carol she went back to her dressing room and was pacing back and forth, sweating over how to handle this unpleasant situation. Finally, she realized she just had to toughen up, suck it up and go out and confront the situation head on and say what needed to be said. Lucy told Carol, "it was at that moment that they first put an 's' at the end of my last name!"
