What do you think would have happened? Would Moondoggie discover Gidget's fib about her age? Would Anne and John been more developed as real people instead of the one note stereotypes they were? Would Larue have had a serious romance? Would we have seen a Christmas episode? The return of The Big Kahuna?

speculate :D

I think that John and Anne would have had a baby.

I think that John and Anne would have had a baby.

Couldn't we assume that that's who Danni's parents were in The New Gidget? Was it ever implied?

I wish there had been 3 seasons of Gidget and only 1 season of Flying Nun. I've always like Gidget a whole lot more than Flying Nun. Still don't see how F.N. lasted 3 years! Gidget deserved 5 years.

Me too! And Sally herself agrees with you!

If what happened to Gidget back then, instead happened today, it would have been revived in a heartbeat.

I'm just glad there wasn't a 2nd season because I'm not a fan of the show. Sally Field's other show The Flying Nun might have taken the fantasy sitcom angle a bit too far with the flying gimmick, but aside from that it's an entertaining show, episodes have good writing and the supporting actors are all superb and perform their roles well. In every facet a much better show compared to Gidget in my opinion.

:p I used to watch Flying Nun, and when summer is over I'll get back to it, summer time is reserved strictly for Gidget at my house. But Flying Nun is just plain inferior in so many ways to Gidget I could spend a page listing them. But to each his own, if you like Flying Nun, by all means enjoy. I'll be picking up watching Flying Nun where the yawning left off in May come mid September. I do watch the series, I just don't enjoy it nearly as much as the lovable Gidget.

Yea I guess Gidget does have a summertime vibe, I've tried to watch the show but just can not get into it, as far as teenage girl sitcoms go I prefer The Patty Duke Show over Gidget.

Regarding The Flying Nun, I hope one day the 3rd season will be out on DVD. I have the 3rd season recorded from TV, but the episodes are edited versions and I would like to have the complete versions.

Or even 2 seasons of Gidget & 2 of the Flying Nun would have been good. I always liked Gidget the best though.

Flying Nun does have one thing Gidget doesn't have that I have always wished it did, and that's a Christmas episode. They mention Christmas in one episode but that in no way was a Christmas show. I wish they had made one Christmas Gidget show. In September I'll be back to watching Flying Nun, I believe I left off in May just about where Season 2 started, so I'll pick it up from there. I don't dislike Flying Nun or I wouldn't watch it, just wish there was more of Gidget.

Wow an over 3 year old post but anyways I would like to see more character development with John & Anne. Even some storylines dealing with that young marriage.

--They should have played up Moondoggie more. He's supposed to be Gidget's boyfriend, why should he pop up only every few episodes? Plus the actors who played his parents were so good.
--Also make Larue less of a sad sack. She's a pretty girl, so why not have an episode where a good looking guy prefers her to Gidget (and causes jealousy)? Let's see her home and family once in a while. Oh yeah and I wouldn't mind seeing Larue in a swimsuit once in a while:) .
Outside of that the series was so good not much should change. Imagine a season finale where Gidget and Moondoggie hit the surf right after getting married. Would have been a classic show finale!

It wasn't implied, it was stated. In fact, I believe Ann and John make an appearance in The New Gidget. I have TNG on DVD somewhere and I recall an episode where Dani gets into trouble and there is talk of Ann and John taking her back with them. Don't hold me to that though!

I too wish Gidget had lasted at least two seasons (five would have been great!). I don't know how well it would have fared as the decade wore on but it would have been great to see more than just the same episodes I've watched a million times! It started off a bit sweet, almost too sweet, but as the season wore on, it got a little wackier and Sally Field did a lot more physical comedy. Like the Take a Lesson and A Hard Night's Night episodes. I would have liked to have seen more episodes like that. Of course, it also would have been great to see Larue get a man. Not some geeky guy either, a real hunk that would just throw off everyone's perception of her.

It's a shame ABC didn't bring it back. Sally was just so perfect in the role. In fact, everyone was so perfectly cast.

Larue DID have a man...His name was Art, and he wasn't a hunk, but he wasn't a "bagger" either...

I'm surprised there wasn't more than one season. That's especially the case when you consider there had been several movies made with that title and the interest there was in surfing. Based on how well Sally Field went on to do as an actress, the series certainly had a great person for the lead. As far as who would have done what, when you have a good cast, the stories and therefore viewer interest seems to take care of itself.

The big problem was it started in a death slot with "Beverly Hillbillies" on CBS and "The Virginian" on NBC. Not only was it hard to beat those faves, but in a lot of smaller markets it wasn't even aired.

True. The ABC-TV Network might have tried to find a better time slot. In some cities in the 1950's and into the middle-1960's, the ABC-TV affiliate shared a channel with one that also featured another network and many times because the show from that other network had better ratings, etc. it was aired instead of the ABC show, Along that same line, sometimes the ABC-TV outlet in a city was on a UHF channel. Some sets didn't have UHF and on those that did the reception of those higher frequency channels may not have been very good. As a result, the ABC-TV Network shows just weren't seen in many markets.

I was about to ask "what shows were on at the same time but you answered that. As a youngster, my parents probably had me watch the Hillbillies.

OH Nuts!

Yeah, it was a shame a Gidget only lasted one season. Like others, I liked Gidget more than the Flying Nun. I would have liked to see Russ get a lady friend and some eps where Gidget is the head of a prom/dance committee. Another idea for a story line would have been Gidget in Driver's Ed.

It is amazing how we are interested in a show that was on the air almost 50 years ago. I am not knocking it, I would have liked a second season too.

Since I bought the DVD set I've been watching Gidget every summer once a week. (I watch Flying Nun the rest of the year.) I too wish Gidget had had a longer run, the show could have gone 5 years following Gidget into college as she aged. Could have been great, lots of story ideas there too. As a kid I remember watching Beverly Hillbillies when it was originally broadcast, hope the Nielson's weren't snooping. But I also remember watching Gidget too, so maybe I either caught it in the summer when ABC showed the repeats or I caught it in syndication after it was cancelled. Either way I've been a fan since.

Flying Nun is far inferior to Gidget, Flying Nun is even boring compared to Gidget. No contest, Gidget should have been the one for the long run. Almost the entire cast of Flying Nun except for the little shy Nun (forget her name) and the other Nun who was the narrator of the series are completely unwatchable and very annoying. What with over acting Carlos and his permanent over the top mad-on raging and the Head nun and her ever present superior attitude, and the entire town of nutcases and bums, it's just a lousy series. Flying Nun would have made a great one-shot-only TV movie. But as far as entertaining and fun to watch? Gidget had it all over the Nun.

I haven't seen this show in a while. Any stations showing it. If so I must not have that station. Growing I wish I was a bit like Gidget. She seemed to have fun.

Good thing there was no 2nd season, as far as I'm concerned there shouldn't have even been a 1st season. The Flying Nun may not rank among the top classic sitcoms of all time, but is miles superior compared to Gidget in my opinion.

You and I is worlds apart, old buddy. My vote is all for Gidget, I wouldn't even put Flying Nun up for comparison it's that bad. But that's what makes the world go around.

As a guy from the Midwest, I think Gidget had so more reality to it than Flying Nun. However, both programs were probably aimed at someone other than myself.

I'm a fan of both series. I do think The Flying Nun maintained a good level of quality over its seasons. The supporting actors were good about consistency in doing their characters (whether one likes 'em or not!).

Sadly we'll never know if a never-materialized Season 2 and up of Gidget would've been as enjoyable as its one season.

Needed more storylines with the sister and brother-in-law. I haven't watched the show in over a year but I'm guessing that they weren't around as much as the season moved forward.

Sally Field was contracted to screen gems and the rerun summer ratings of Gidget picked up quite a bit, but by then the sets were scrapped and The Nun was about to fly into pilot.

I know Sally hated Nun, so she would have been happier, but I can't imagine a TV world without The Flying Nun. To me and others the appeal was the adorable cuteness and innocent portrayal of both characters. It was cute that in one ep of "nun" they show clips from Gidget surfing as a teen before joining the convent. Plus Sally Sung and a Flying Nun soundtrack was issued, like in screen gems tradition!

Its funny that since 39 episodes were only made, the series wasn't re-discovered for syndication till the summer of 1985 or so. Now with Antenna TV, that is why a whole new generation is discovering both series. My teen niece loves Gidget (named her cat).

The Gidget Franchise was so successful with Sandra Dee as the first movie Gidget......I think a reboot with Karen Valentine could have worked.

My fustrating question and the reason why the 60's version was syndicated in the mid 80's was in conjuction with the first run syndication reboot "The New Gidget" with Caryn Richmond (adorable and perky and aunt of younger Gidget) but the series was all Richmond! Lasted 3 seasons I think, but I loved it and am very fustrated it has been LOST forever it seems and to me should be aired and paired during off seasons of Gidget.

The problem with Sally Field was that nobody took her seriously until after "Norma Rae." Not just "Gidget," not just "The Flying Nun," but also "The Girl With Something Extra"--all those series had her as a lighter-than-air character. Whether she was "toodles-ing" as "Gidget," up in the air as Sister Bertrille as "The Flying Nun," or as one "who suffered from ESP" in "The Girl with Something Extra" -- although having John Davidson as her husband would make almost any woman suffer! -- Sally Field in her sitcom days had nothing truly memorable to offer.

And as for "Gidget" in a second season? I don't think so....sitcom reality in 1966-67 was decidedly unrealistic. We were still living in a world where everybody drove the current model of the auto sponsor's car, had neatly-dressed, neatly-pressed parents and children, and the mother wore pearls while dusting and cleaning. "Gidget" was more a late 1950's show than a mid-'60's show.
