View Full Version : Be Honest....When You Think of Gavin Macleod... Brian Damage 03-31-2010, 01:34 AM Do you know him more as Murray Slaughter from TMTMS or Captain Merrill Stubing from "The Love Boat"??? scotsguy 03-31-2010, 05:44 AM Do you know him more as Murray Slaughter from TMTMS or Captain Merrill Stubing from "The Love Boat"??? Murray for me as not seen "The Love Boat" for years,I understand Ted Knight did an episode of "The Love Boat",love to see that. catlover79 03-31-2010, 07:41 AM I've seen much more of TMTMS than LB, so I'll say Murray. Marvo301 03-31-2010, 05:06 PM Having been a fan of both shows I'd have to say I know him equally as both characters. But my favorite Gavin McLeod character is C.S. Divot in the Peter Sellars movie "The Party". PGood97041 03-31-2010, 07:26 PM Ha ha...great question. Why not Happy Haines from McHale's Navy, while we're at it? But since I never really watched Love Boat (although aware of what a cultural phenomenon it became), I vote for Murray Slaughter, one of the many great characters on the best situation comedy ever, The Mary Tyler Moore Show! catlover79 03-31-2010, 07:30 PM ^ I forgot that he was in McHale's Navy. Good call!! Miss Lisa 03-31-2010, 09:21 PM I've only seen like maybe two eps of LB, and I did see him first on TMTMS so I'm going to have to go with Murray. Kristen 03-31-2010, 11:38 PM Do I even have to answer this question? Love Boat, all the way! No, j/k, of course! ;) I don't care what Gavin ever does, he's always going to be Murray to me. I've never really seen Love Boat, other than a few clips. - Kristen Mr. Television 03-31-2010, 11:42 PM I guess I'm going to be the first to say The Love Boat. I grew up with both shows but he was the definate star of LB while just a member of a very talented supporting cast on MTM. catlover79 03-31-2010, 11:52 PM I guess I'm going to be the first to say The Love Boat. I grew up with both shows but he was the definate star of LB while just a member of a very talented supporting cast on MTM. You're right - TMTMS had one of the best ensemble casts in TV history. catlover79 03-31-2010, 11:59 PM Murray for me as not seen "The Love Bioat" for years,I understand Ted Knight did an episode of "The Love Boat",love to see that. Ted actually was on SIX Love Boat episodes from between 1980-83. :D http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0461095/ treky 04-01-2010, 01:52 AM well, since I haven't seen "TMTMS" and "TLB" in years but I've been watching "McHALES NAVY" recently, I'll say "Happy" haines on "McHALES NAVY". scotsguy 04-01-2010, 03:22 AM Thats great Ted was in six episodes of "The Love Boat",he and Gavin were great friends I hear, apparently Ted and Ed could have a bit of a rocky relationship at times accoring to Ed. Leigh Ann 04-01-2010, 08:52 AM Definitely Murray. I've never watched the Love Boat. He was also in a couple episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and in "Empress Carlotta's Necklace" from The Dick Van Dyke Show. :D I always think "Yay, Murray!" when I see those. catlover79 04-01-2010, 11:44 AM Thats great Ted was in six episodes of "The Love Boat",he and Gavin were great friends I hear, apparently Ted and Ed could have a bit of a rocky relationship at times accoring to Ed. Yes, Gavin and Ted stayed close friends up until Ted's passing. According to Gavin's book Back On Course, he did the eulogy at Ted's funeral. Ted and Ed's relationship was a bit rocky at times because they came from opposite ends at the political spectrum. Ted was a conservative Republican, and Ed was (and is) a liberal Democrat. I guess some of their discussions could get a bit heated. (I remember seeing Ed in a TV interview a few years ago where he mentioned all this.) Tweety 04-01-2010, 02:07 PM Definitely Murray. He was hilarious on the MTM show, I never thought that Love Boat was really all THAT funny. I didn't watch L.B. regularly, I sometimes tried to catch it if it had someone on that I really liked. But I couldn't tell you about a single episode of L.B. if I had to. I don't remember anything about even the episodes that I "liked", other than to tell you who was on them. I guess on the Love Boat, that kind of had an ensemble cast as well, even though Gavin was a star at the time. The show was never really about him, it was about the guest stars. So in a way, he was really a supporting player on that as well. Even though he'd been "type-cast" (in my mind, anyway) as Murray, he was pretty believable as the captain of a cruise ship. btw, I also remember Gavin playing the part of a German on "Hogan's Heroes". He wasn't that believable to me in those parts, although he did those before he did the MTM show (but after McHale's Navy). I also didn't watch McHale's Navy very much as a kid (my older brother and sister were bigger fans of that show than I was). I enjoyed M.Navy when I did watch it in reruns, but I never really got into that one all that much. OH Nuts! 04-01-2010, 05:09 PM Definitely Murray. I just loved the MTM show & he added nicely to it. Never cared for the Love Boat per se so that probably also has something to do with it. Yong Fang 04-06-2010, 01:02 AM Neither really, but I'd would say "TMTMS" because I never really liked The Love Boat, even as a kid. That and that cheesy Fantasy Island. At least Fantasy Island had "Corinthian Leather Man" and a funny looking child who yelled "De Plane, De Plane!" I don't know enough about Gavin McLeod as a person, but I knew that he had a religious experience and is now a "Christian". His divorced wife also converted and they remarried, which is nice. They are on a cable channel called TBN, The Trinity Broadcasing Network, also known by detractors as The Blasphemy Network. Basically the "word-faith" movement, the same movement that spawned the careers such as Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, Paul and "Crazy Looking Woman" Crouch, the Farting Preacher (look up in YouTube, name escapes me) and a dozen other petty con-men. Dude looks about the same except he has white hair now. Sort of looks like our 6th President, John Quincy Adams. I went to college with a Gavin. Nice fellow. I told him that I have only knew one other Gavin before and we both said together "The guy on The Love Boat." I have sense had the misfortune of meeting another Gavin, someone who I would love to run over with an 18 wheeler. But that is not here nor there. Family Ties Forever! 04-11-2010, 07:56 PM Murray ClassicTVGal 04-13-2010, 10:40 PM Definately is role as Murray Slaughter comes to mind 1ST. Then The Love Boat. But I haven't seen a lot of TLB. Yes, he was in an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show. And his character was *very* funny, even though it was a small part. He played Mel Cooley's cousin, Maxwell. And everytime Buddy would say, "shoehorn" he'd laugh, LOL. Or even at an insult he threw at Mel. Actually, I think I've heard the name "Gavin" maybe twice after Gavin MacLeod. A man I know, his grandson's name is Gavin, and...GUESS WHAT?! his daughter's name....is Mary! LOL *ROTFL* Steve M. 06-10-2010, 09:49 PM Murray, because he was more likeable than Captain Stubing. |
