Just caught the episode "So Lonely I Could Cry" (S1, ep 12). They introduced the character "Shirley Meyers" a fellow widow, whom Phyllis meets at a 'widows' club, a friend who tries to out-do Phyllis every step of the way.
The character was great - really revived this sleepy series. Rae was a hoot on the show, grabbing the most laughs. I can't understand why the writers did not bring her back as a regular - she was much needed on this show!
(Of course, years later, Leachman would replace Rae on "The Facts of Life" in the mid-80s).
