Get ready for a 'Butch Cassidy' sequel.

Only this time, it'll be without the Sundance Kid.

According to the AP, the film, titled 'Blackthorn,' will begin shooting next month in Bolivia, with playwright and actor Sam Shepard starring as he leader of the Hole in the Wall Gang.

The plot has Cassidy (aka Robert LeRoy Parker) planning one last heist before retiring.

If the plot sounds at all confusing, you're not alone. In the final action sequence of the true-life, Oscar-winning western from 1969, rascally outlaws Sundance (Robert Redford) and Butch (Paul Newman) were gunned down rather convincingly in a barrage of Bolivian policemen's bullets. How Cassidy survived the gundown remains to be seen.

Mateo Gil ('The Sea Inside') will direct the film. No word yet on whether the ghosts of Jesse James or Billy the Kid will make cameos.

Sigh sometimes I'd wish people in the industry would leave well enough alone. The orig. was wonderful - I still remember how much I enjoyed it many yrs. later. Redford & Newman are hard to trump IMO - in addition to a very nice #1 hit song emerging from the orig.

Maybe this movie will work but I doubt it (although I'm always open to be proving wrong)...we'll just have to wait & see

They did do a prequel: Butch and Sundance: The Early Days '79, Willam Katt was the Sundance Kid, and Tom Berenger was Butch Cassidy.

Well a prequel makes a whole lot more sense than a sequel since its quite obvious that neither Butch nor Sundance could possibly have survived the shootout in the final scene of the original film!
