10. The Barones (Everybody Loves Raymond) 1996–2005
Perhaps TV’s last blockbuster family comedy, Everybody Loves Raymond wrapped after nine years at the height of its creative powers and popularity, having struck a chord with its uproariously relatable twists on the universal aggravations of family life. Molehills erupted into mountains of comic conflict in the battle of wills between Ray (Ray Romano) and Debra Barone (Patricia Heaton), raising three kids across the street from Ray’s colossally intrusive parents, Frank (Peter Boyle) and Marie (Doris Roberts). “It was based on truth,” says Roberts, who won four Emmys as the meddling Marie. “Everything that was done on that show came from somebody’s family.” A tainted meatball recipe, a suitcase left on the stairs, a ruined wedding video (taped over for a football game)—all achieved mythically funny proportions in the never-ending war of the Barones. No wonder everybody loved them.
