I don't think Shemp is really the most underrated Stooge. I suspect that title would probably go to Joe Besser. Although in Joe's defense he was only part of the act for a short time. Ironically he filed the gap left in the act by the death of Shemp Howard.

The only reason why I say Shemp was underrated, is because when the average person thinks of the 3 stooges, people immediately think of the larry, Moe and Curly group.

Yes they do. That's because when the 3 stooges first appeared on film it was Larry, Moe, and Curly who appeared. When the group got its start in vaudeville it consisted of Larry, Moe , and Shemp. When the boys got their first movie contract Shemp opted to leave the group to pursue a solo career as a character actor. So Moe and Shemp's kid brother Jerry was recruited to take his place in the stooges. Jerry shaved his head and became known as Curley. It was these three who rocketed to fame and are to this day identified as the three stooges. As for Shemp he had a fairly succesful career as a character actor but it is mostly forgotten. What people mostly remember Shemp for is replacing Curly when he became to ill to appear in 3 stooges films.
