ABC and Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes have agreed to let the 31-year-old actress out of her contract and an announcement may be made later this week, a source told the website.

ABC had no comment, while Heigl is currently without a publicist.

Heigl has been MIA for most of the medical drama's sixth season, taking a leave of absence to shoot a film and to spend time with her daughter, Naleigh, whom she adopted in the fall. Her most recent episode aired in January. She was scheduled to return to the set earlier this month, but didn't show after her messages inquiring about her call times went unreturned, the source said.

It's unclear how her character, Izzie Stevens, will be written out, but Heigl, who won the show's sole acting Emmy in 2007, is not expected to return at all for the final five episodes of the season, according to Entertainment Weekly (which first reported the story), making her January appearance her final (regular) hurrah as Izzie.

Heigl's reported exit follows years of drama between her and the ABC hit. She slammed Isaiah Washington in 2007 for using a slur about their co-star and her good friend T.R. Knight. A year later, she removed her name from Emmy eligibility because she "did not feel I was given the material ... to warrant a nomination." Last summer, she told David Letterman that she found the show's 17-hour day on the first day back on Season 6 to be "cruel and mean."

Somehow I don't think a lot of tears are going to be shed over this.

Exactly, this woman has a lot of talent, but all she did was act like a diva on the set.

I liked Izzie. Grey's is really going down the drain now which is sad because it used to be such a good show.
