View Full Version : Long Lasting Sitcoms That Were Mediocre

To put this in another way, this concerns sitcoms that somehow managed to run a minimum of three seasons. But in spite of all of this, the shows carried a tendency of being lackluster, unoriginal and/or uninovative, stale, or lame in terms of the storytelling, production values, and jokes.

Here is a baker's dozen of shows I think fit the category:

1. Cheers
2. Beverly Hills, 90210
3. Married ... with Children
4. The Simpsons
5. The Mary Tyler Moore Show
6. Friends
7. Frasier
8. Saturday Night Live
9. Night Court
10. The Facts of Life
11. All in the Family
12. The X-Files
13. Roseanne

I forgot:

14. Three's Company

A baker's dozen plus one!

Full House. The first couple of seasons were okay, but the last 5 were blah.

How could you have forgotten Familly Matters and Step By Step?

An arguement can at least be made when it comes to Family Matters when it comes to being a rather lame sitcom that managed to last. The show was essentially a repetitious, contrived, and increasingly corny little show. As the show gradually grew more and more cartoonish, it slowly started to lose its grip.

Maybe so, but 10 seasons of 90210 was 10 seasons too many!

Definitely The Nanny! Filler Alert! I guess the Tracey Ullman show isn't a sitcom, but I'd have to say that it is the worst longest running show of all time. The opening theme is still the same from 1984!!

Too the poster that said "Caroline in the City", that show only lasted 4 years. Granted, it wasn't very good, but 4 years isn't that long.

Home Improvement - very overrated show. Plus those kids got fugly.

Cheers - A good show, but it seems they ran out of good ideas by the last season or two.

Simpsons - one of my favorites. I'd rather have this one leave the air with it's fans waiting for more, rather than watching a slow demise.

All in the Famil - another one of my favorites, and it was very painful watching it's slow demise.

And finally, I'm already ducking from all the rotten fruit you guys are going to throw my way for this one, but I didn't find Seinfeld even remotely funny.

Edited to say I before E except after C unless you're spelling Seinfeld. I'm writing Spelling for Dummies....

Nah, Seinfeld could and can give me a good laugh once in awile, but like FOL-FAN said, the final episode really blowed.
I know this is'nt a sitcom, but 'Walker,Texas Ranger' anyone?
What about 'Nash Bridges'? Why don't they put a cool show set in San Francisco?
Yeah, yeah, 'Full House', but that does'nt really count...

I only liked Cheers when Shelly Long was on.

The show had 160+ episodes, and maybe four of them were mediocre. Just because the finale happened to be one of those medicore episodes doesn't mean that it lasted too long. I'm still amazed at how the writers managed to tie in just about every aspect of each plot into the endings. It's unlikely we'll ever see a show that was as original and witty as this show was. About the only attempts at canned laughter on this show were when Kramer would fall down or trip over his own two feet in order to get cheap laughs.

i am sorry but even if it was only four years Caroline in the city was a terrible show and for it to even last one year never mind FOUR is a travisty. first of all Leah Thompson cannot do comedy, and she knows that so why in the hell would she ever try to do a comedy series? second the writers could not come up with an original concept if they had it sitting write in front of them, this show featuered every contrived and cliched story ever thought up. the last season was by far the worst, when they brought in that dam julia.. that was just to much.. julia was a cliche in herself. a beautiful and DUMB women.. please..

I never could get the appeal of The Golden Girls, Friends, Seinfeld, Frasier, Will & Grace, Suddenly Susan, Caroline in the City, a lot of other NBC filler, Touched by an Angel, and a lot of other shows.

Neither could I. (Add "Cheers" to the list of shows whose appeal I could not get, BTW.)

I have seen "Touched by an Angel" twice, which is more than any of those "NBC filler" shows plus "Cheers" combined.
