In the spotty history of movie remakes, this may be the worst idea ever: a remake of the all-time classic fantasy film The Wizard of Oz.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Warner Brothers is mulling two possible Oz films:

One project, called "Oz," currently lives at Warner's New Line label. It's being produced by Temple Hill, which is behind a little franchise called "Twilight," and has a script written by Darren Lemke, a writer on the upcoming "Shrek Forever After."
A second "Wizard of Oz" project, set up at Warners proper, skews a little darker —it's written by "A History of Violence" screenwriter Josh Olson and focuses on a granddaughter of Dorothy who returns to Oz to fight evil.


The second idea sounds a lot like Tim Burton's current Disney hit, Alice in Wonderland. But the guy who wrote David Cronenberg's violent, dark rumination on America??

In the history of Oz follow-ups, almost no one remembers 1974's Journey Back to Oz or 1985's Return to Oz, with good reason, though the latter has its fans. The musical and movie The Wiz also has boosters, but about the only widely popular follow-up to the original was the hit musical Wicked, based on the best-selling book by Gregory Maguire. (We're also partial to Syfy's miniseries Tin Man, but that's us.)

Why can't they leave well enough alone? The 1939 Wizard Of Oz movie is a classic. A great movie that should not be redone.

As for the 1985 sequel, Return To Oz, I didn't like it. That movie was creepy!

The 1939 version may be the best, but it's not the first-

There was also a sequel- The Land of Oz(1932)

As much as l like the '39 version, Return to Oz('85) better captured the spirit and tone of the books.

I wouldn't mind seeing a new version if they are to adapt from Baum's books and not the '39 script.

No one said they are remaking the 1939 movie.........they are using the source material which are the Oz books. I for one would like to see adaptations done from those books.

I actually enjoyed "Journey Back to Oz". It's been years since I saw it, but I have fond memories of it.

As to the remakes/adaptations, no one should seriously think about actually remaking the 1939 film. And if they are going to use Baum's work as source material, I really don't want to see a "darker" Oz...the world is plenty dark enough as it is, thank you. And for that matter, the 1939 film had it's dark moments.

i rember wizard of ozz. i hadn't seen it in years. i rember watchign return of ozz at my shcool. it creeped me out for weeks. i was 10 years old.

Exactly! I love the Oz books and the Judy Garland movie has very little to do with them.

Read the books, people, it's about time you learned that Oz wasn't just a dream, the slippers weren't made of rubies, and Dorothy did not end up in Kansas.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Masterpieces CAN NOT be topped and remakes will only look shabby in compasion.

Yeah it was a remake, but the ones that came before and after aren't as well known. The 1939 movie the classic that people know and probably grew up with. Alot of the others I've never seen and alot haven't even heard of them.

Except that the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has yet to have a faithful adaptation made in the sound era.

People just don't want to read the books, they're happier watching the glitzy 1939 movie and think that that's the same thing :rolleyes:
