In 1985, while Too Close For Comfort was being retooled as The Ted Knight Show, Bullock learned that he was HIV positive. Bullock is a longtime survivor of the virus and was still healthy due in part to antiretroviral drugs.

It was 11 years before Bullock, went public with his illness. "And a lot of it was spent in what only can be described as knifepoint fear, both for my life and for the ability to continue to earn a living."

What Bullock now finds "too close for comfort" is that the message of the tragic struggles during the "Dark Ages" of AIDS is being forgotten. New findings released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week show AIDS is again on the rise among gays.

"But the big difference is that we really didn't know what we were dealing with back then," says Bullock. "Now that we do it's a little disheartening to see people disregarding those painfully learned lessons."

"It is still a disease and there is no cure. We all have to remember that before we do things we'll regret,"
