Hey, I've wondered a few times. You know in I Love Lucy one of Lucy's famous antiques was her famous whaling crying? Well I was wondering did Lucy ever do that much in her later shows like "Here's Lucy" and "Life With Lucy"? I know she did that a few times during "The Lucy Show" and quite often through "I Love Lucy" but, did she ever do that in her later shows?
I've wondered this until the other day when I was watching the second season of "Here's Lucy" and she did that whaling cry at the end of the episode "Lucy Becomes A Laundress". Was that the only time she ever did that after I love Lucy and The Lucy Show or did she ever do that since then? Also, if she did which episodes was it in?
Also, did Lucille Ball really cry like that in real life to or was that just her Lucy characters that did that? I know you could probably see a little bit of Lucy Ricardo in both Lucy Carmichael (The Lucy Show) and Lucy Carter (Here's Lucy). Please let me know. Thanks.

The short answer, yes, Lucille Ball used that cry on The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy. She didn't do it as often as in I Love Lucy, but she did do it. One instance that comes to mind is the scene on The Lucy Show when she's in the pool with the porpoises at Marineland. I don't remember whether she ever did it on Life with Lucy. And no, she did not cry that way in real life. This cry is something she adapted as part of her comedy schtick after Jess Oppenheimer got involved in her career as head writer on My Favorite Husband (and later as head writer and producer of I Love Lucy). Oppenheimer previously worked for Fanny Brice, who used that cry for her Baby Snooks character. In the following clip at :09, you can hear Fanny Brice do her Baby Snooks cry:

And again in this one at 7:00 (sounds very much like Lucy Ricardo here):

In the opening credits to The Lucy Show, (the kalidescope opening), Lucy is doing her "waaahhhh" cry while she she's holding a bursted bottle of champagne, remember?
And it seems to me she did it after Mr. Mooney yelled at her once in a while on TLS, but I don't remember so much on Here's Lucy.

I think that's a fire hose. She set the radio studio on fire and had to put it out. :)
Coincidentally, in the Life With Lucy premiere she fills the hardware store with with foam from a fire extinguisher. In the next scene, at home with everybody scolding her for having wreaked havoc, she just barely and so softly, well, almost/sort of does the cry and the audience bursts into applause. It wasn't at all the full-on waaaaah, but, as has been so often reported about that series, the studio audience was in awe.
