"Police Academy"

New Line is looking for recruits for a relaunched "Police Academy" movie. Original producer Paul Maslansky is back for the new iteration, which has no writer or director attached.

"Academy" was a seven-film lowbrow comedy series from Warner Bros. that saw a city throw open the doors of its police force to any recruit, much to the chagrin of its serious officers. The misfit officers band together and, of course, save the city.

The first film, released in 1984, starred Steve Guttenberg as Mahoney, a repeat offender who is forced to enter the academy and emerges as the group's leader. Other notable characters included Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), gun-crazy Tackleberry (David Graf), mousy Hooks (Marion Ramsey) and sound effects-spewing Larvell Jones (Michael Winslow).

Bobcat Goldthwait joined the cast for the second movie in 1985. The series, which included Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone as romantic leads, ended with the 1994's "Mission to Moscow." All told, the franchise took in about $240 million worldwide and inspired a pair of TV series.

"It's going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV," Maslansky said. "It's going to be a new class. We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians. It'll be anything but another movie with a numeral next to it. And we'll most probably retain the wonderful musical theme."

The early entries in the series featured sexual humor, but later films became more kid-friendly. Details of the tone of new movie, which would take the story to its beginnings with new characters, were unavailable.

This time around, corporate parent Warner Bros. has sister company New Line taking the title out of its library, as it recently did with the "National Lampoon's Vacation" series.

They should've stopped making them after part 4 when Steve stopped doing them. Part 4 was the best one to me. Michael Winslow was so funny in the first 4 hahahahahahahahaha. I like those voice imitations he does. Bobcat Goldthwait was funny in 3 and 4 also. GW Bailey was also funny in the first 4. I was glad Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone was in part 1 and part 4 respectively. They were hot back then.

In an interview with MTV, Producer Paul Maslansky said he hopes to bring back some of the original boys (and girls) in blue to train up the new recruits.

"All I know is that I want to bring back some of the older characters to it, and maybe they'll have principal roles, some of them, and some of them might be just you know [a cameo]."

If I was a betting man I'd say Guttenberg, Michael Winslow (who reprised Jones for the "Police Academy" TV series), G.W Bailey, Bubba Smith and have a shot at those "principal roles" whilst George Gaynes, now 92, would likely make a special but fleeting appearance as fan fave Lassard.

Sad that Tackleberry won't be back (David Graf is no longer with us) but there's a fair chance we will be seeing his offspring in the new film. Those that watched the spin-off TV series will recall a Dean and Dirk Tacklberry at the Academy.

At one stage Guttenberg mentioned Sharon Stone and Kim Cattrall would be likely reprising their roles as Claire Mattson (from "Police Academy IV : Citizens on Patrol") and Karen Thompson ("Police Academy"), respectively, but I'd say that's merely wishful thinking on Mahoney's behalf.

What will be back? The iconic theme and the atmosphere of the 1984 original...

"I want to recreate that atmosphere that the first [movie] had. I'm going to use the theme obviously from Robert Folk, who wrote the music. Believe me, that theme, probably it was as helpful as anything in that first movie to bring it to life," Maslansky explained. "I'm going to do everything in my power to satisfy an audience that I know will be accepting."

As for where the film is at? "We're just in the formative stage", says Maslansky.
